My LO is 11 days and had some initial trouble latching in the hospital so we were using a nipple shield. We went to see an LC and she gave us some advice and now he latches on to my left breast very well. He wont take my right one at all without the shield. I really want to stop using it so I can more easily nurse in public, but I think he won't latch on my right because the flow is too fast.
Details:
- he latches sucks once or twice and then pulls away
- he gets very upset when I try to latch him multiple times
- when I pump with my double electric the right breast produces more
- my right breast gets more engorged/more quickly
- we've tried multiple positions on both sides, he won't latch on my breast in any, he latches well on the shield with all positions we've tried
- when he nurses from my right side (with the shield) he tends to spit-up more. He usually only burps after nursing on the left breast (no shield).
- I've noticed my milk is thinner over the past couple of days (both breasts).
- he only feeds for 10 minutes per side (especially the right side even with the shield) and seems very satisfied afterwards (he is well above his birth weight already)
- sometimes he only feeds from 1 side for 10 minutes and is done.
Does any of this sound like a flow issue? Are there other signs I should look for? Can he eventually adjust?
The LC did get him to latch on the right at our appointment but it took 30 minutes and she was very forceful. When I switched to the left he latched right away.
If anyone has any advice I would be so grateful! I'm getting so frustrated with always needing the shield and being covered in milk (LO too) every time we try without it because I leak everywhere, almost spray!!
Thanks!!
