So I want to start reading a series of books to my 3 year old (July 2011) at bedtime. Do you think I could start Harry Potter now? What age do you think Book 1 is appropriate for a child to grasp? How about attention span? Why am I over thinking this? I haven't read Sorcerer's Stone since it was originally released.

Re: Harry Potter - When to start reading series to child?
I think ages 7-8 might be a better time to start HP. Some of my friends read it to their kids around that age, and they loved reading it together.
Eta: I mean, I don't have a three year old, so I can't speak to attention span either. But we will probably read it to DD when she's older.

My 3.5 year old had zero interest. He's also got the attention span of a gnat though.
