Kades Birth Story (rachelandjacob)

I'm finally getting around to post my birth story 18 days later.  Sorry if it's a bit long.

My due date was 6/2, but due to issues that I was having, decreased fetal movement and my amniotic fluid was decreasing, my OB felt as though it was safer to induce us. We were expected to be in L&D on 5/12 at 6:00 AM.  I did not sleep a wink the night before, and was happy when my alarm finally went off at 4:00.

We got hooked up around 7:00 to the pitocin.  I was dilated to a 1, with 80 % effacement due to our stress test that we had the previous week.  My Dr. came over at about 11, and I was dilated a 1-2 with 80% effacement still, and she broke my water. I had been having contractions, but nothing unbearable yet.  After she broke my water, it was almost instant that I started feeling contractions, and they were getting stronger.  I wanted to go as long as I could without an epidural, and finally around 3:30, I couldn't take it anymore and got an epidural placed. Sweet Jesus, it was heaven!  I was making jokes that I could pop babies out if it felt like that.

My Dr. came back and checked me around 6:00, and I had only dilated to a 2-3.  My mom and my husband were there, and they ate dinner while I starved to death.  I didn't realize I could have eaten breakfast, I thought I had to show up NPO. My Dr. came back at around 10:00 and I was a 3-4. She said it would be a long night, but wasn't concerned.

At about 11:30, I woke up to strong contractions and I could feel my legs. I was starting to panic a little bit because I thought something was wrong.  My mom had taken a nap, and she woke up and I was crying because I was in so much pain. The nurse called anesthesiology and they told her to up the medicine to see if that helped, and it did not. An hour later or so, the baby started to have heart decelerations with every contraction, and so they decided to put an internal monitor in to monitor better.  My Dr. was called because his HR went down into the 70's and came back up, so she wasn't worried about that, but apparently she was worried because the nurse was less than impressive. (I found this out later)

My Dr. came in at 2:30 and sat in my room, and I was still experiencing pain, on a scale of 1-10, I told her I was a 15.  I started vomiting from the pain, the contractions were on top of each other, and I couldn't catch my breath or get a break.  My Dr. told the nurse to call anesthesiology to have them come up and place another epidural.  He came quickly, and said my first epidural became dislodged.  While he was working on the epidural, he gave me some Fentanyl. It lasted about an hour, and then started wearing off and I could feel the contractions in one spot on my left side of my belly.  I started throwing up again, and the baby's heart rate went down again and wasn't coming back up, so they gave me oxygen and told me to change positions, which was a bit of a task since I had an epidural in, catheter, epidural pump, oxygen mask, blood pressure cuff, but I knew I had to for my baby.

At this point, my Dr. called an fellow OB/GYN to consult him and he said as long as baby's heart rate was coming back up, he was OK not doing a c-section.  He was going to come over at check me later that morning, (I lost track of time)  In the meantime, I felt so much pressure like I was going to shit all over the place, but I know I wasn't dilated yet, I was only at a 7-8, but I couldn't help but bear down, but the baby's heart went down every time I did it.  My Mom kept coaching me to breathe through the contractions, and kept reminding me that I was doing it for my baby.  I told her I would give all the money I had for a c-section - I tried to tell her I was DONE. She told me that unfortunately I couldn't be done, and I had to keep going. At that point,I wanted to die.

The other Dr. came back and checked me, and said I was at a 9.5 and he was going to go see a patient and come back and see what the status was. What they wanted to do was bring me to the OR in case they needed to do an emergency c-section if things did not go well. That was the longest 30 minutes of my life, still trying not to push, but having NO control over my body bearing down.  The baby's heart rate kept dipping down more so than it was before.  The other Dr. finally came back, and I was finally complete. I pushed once, and baby's heart rate went down to 60 and didn't come back up.  The other Dr. flew out of my room to get my Mom and half of L&D (it felt like it) and a swarm of people flew in. They put up the stirrups and said they didn't have time to bring us to the OR, and we were having a baby right then and there.  The Dr. told me I had to push even with no contractions. The most pain, and scariest thing I have ever been through - 6 pushes later and my baby was out.  The cord was wrapped around his shoulder, which was causing all of the distress. It took him just a few minutes to pink up and we were able to do skin to skin.  After 30 hours of labor, 2 failed epidurals, Vomiting, Near Death (pretty sure) 2 stitches, my beautiful baby was there.  I would have done it all over again for him. I'm SO in love.
