I get a fair amount from DD at random times. She will usually hold eye contact while eating fairly regularly. So will DS, but he is much more interested in looking at everything but me the rest of the time.
I am getting some, but not a lot, of eye contact so far. She is 6 weeks old today. She is less alert than DD1 was at this age, but DD2 was also 3 weeks early, so I wonder if that has something to do with it? Most of the time she just looks around at everything else.
We get quite a bit from him at various times. He just hit 1 month the other day. During feedings he holds contact for the majority of the time. If you are close enough (1-2 feet) to his face, he will usually look right at us or others.
Sounds like there is a wide range right now, which I know in my head is normal. Like I mentioned before, having an older kid on the spectrum...to put it mildly my eyes are wide open about seeing signs. It helps to hear that what she is doing is totally normal.
Little to no eye contact from DD. Maybe during feedings but not always. And very fleeting when it does happen.

I'm so glad I read this thread. As someone with a career in neurological development, it is easy to get caught up in stats and research instead of taking a normative sample from those around you. My little guy is 3.5 weeks and I feel like we've held eye contact only a time or two and it was freaking me out. Glad there seems to be a range.

That's why I asked. My daily life is one of abnormal (well, it's normal for us...) neuro development. Sometimes I need to take a step back and get my bearings.
Also, <4 weeks is for sure too early to be concerned with eye contact. Their eyesight is pretty limited that early on.
Re: Those with 5 to 6 week olds...
My concern with this is that ds is autistic. To put it mildly, that is on my radar...
@typeset Your two cents?
