Tips for getting into the crib

I know I'm late to the party with this! LO is still in his RNP. We've tried numerous times to get him into the crib which results in screaming and too much crying for us to handle. He hasn't been swaddled since he was three months and has been rolling over for about a month. We have the snuggabunny RNP and he falls alseep stroking the ears. He also falls alseep holding on to blankets (only during naps while we're watching him and we take the blanket away as soon as he's asleep!). I'd love to have him hold on to something to help soothe him to sleep in the crib like the snuggapuppy ears but I'm nervous about that in a crib.

What worked for you transitioning to the crib??

Re: Tips for getting into the crib

  • I don't know if this helped because we always did it. But we change his diaper in the crib. Maybe having a different association with it might get him used to being in it? Not at all sure if it will work. But I didnt have any trouble getting him to sleep in the crib. Could be worth trying!

  • Second the needing a lovey! I made a silky blanket and there are also lots of other options too. For us as well, DD loves (and DS did as well) the FP rainforest soother. Good luck!

  • We used the crib from the get go so it might be a little different, but some things that may help:

We would transfer LO to the crib after she was asleep (VERY carefully, in deep sleep) so she would get used to it and at least become familiar with waking up in it.

Have you actually tried the crib yet? Once LO could roll over, her sleep in the crib was MUCH better.

We were nervous about putting ANYTHING in the crib at first, but it was important for her to feel secure (and for all of us to sleep!). So we try to put as little in the crib as possible, and nothing too fluffy or "suffocating." We've put in a crocheted blanket (has holes to breathe), a soft but firm "lovey" (like Sophie or the music seahorse), or a paci at times.

You can play lullaby or white noise while in the RNP so when he hears the familiar noise in the crib, it will be more comforting.

Also not sure about your thoughts on sleep training. GL
  • We have a blanket in LO's crib & she "holds it" during the night with her hands. It us only waist high on her though & is tucked in so she can't pull it over her head or move it around. It works great for us!

My LO wears a sleep sack and she holds onto it for comfort. We use the Aidan and Anais light weight cotton ones.
  • We just got a Zippidee zip sleep sack and tried it last night...she slept 11-5:30 without waking wanting her pacifier. It has covered arms to snuggle/hold on to. Don't know if it's first night luck or what, but thought I'd share! I'll write back tomorrow if it was a fluke. : )

  • We moved our DD from the rnp to the crib. We rolled up two towels and placed them under the sheet so they would be on either side of her when she was put down. The first night was the hardest but she does fine now. Good luck!
  • We moved LO still in his basket into the cot so he was used to the space. Not sure if you could remove the mattress for the RNP to have a flat surface to sit on I haven't really seen one.
  • We got M two stuffed animals to snuggle with. They are not too large, don't shed fuzzies, can be machine washed and aren't likely to conform to his face to be a suffocation risk. Now he rolls into his side, hugs an animal and goes right to sleep.

  • We just moved dd2 from the Rnp to her crib yesterday- I started with laying her in her crib and doing some organizing in her room, making sure it was quick so she'd be happy and hoping shed associate the crib as a good thing and having that open space Earlier this week I started dressing her and getting her ready in her room. I then started with naps and she has a adain and anais blankie she holds onto as well as a bigger one that I put to her waist. I also have a wedge under the sheets to help prop her up a little and a sound machine. She also has a ladybug star nightlight as well

    Lovey for sure.
We have small lamb one. I let LO sleep with hers, she rubs it on her face etc. When we go to sleep, I check that it's not on top of her face, and move it to the side of the crib if it is. She finds it if she needs it.  My LO loves soft blankety things as well and helps to soothe her.
