Baby Names

Dermot: yay or nay?

Hubby and I both like this for a boy. He is really set on Irish names and this was one of a very few we could agree on. Thoughts?

Sounds like a last name to me & makes me think of Dean McDermott. I think there are better Irish names out there.

I try to avoid the last name as first name trend, but our first favorite was Cormac and everyone we mentioned it to said "Oh, like McCormick spices?" So.. maybe we do like last names as first and don't know it! ha!

  • It's a legit name and this spelling is easier to pronounce than others. I don't think it is particularly lovely, but that's just personal preference. Don't mind it on someone else's kid. I like Cormac much better, though.

    Did you consider
    Desmond
    Declan
    Lachlan
    Cedric

We love Cormac so much, but got the "McCormick spice" comment too much when we were pregnant with #1.

Desmond- I would consider this. I'll have to ask DH
Declan- too trendy where we are from- know tons of Declans- even though I do like it
Lachlan- seems like a girl's name to me for some reason
Cedric- associate with Cedric the Entertainer- not bad, but not really for me

    Thank you for the suggestions!

In terms of the last name thing - it's the other way around. McDermott, for example comes from the first name and means 'son of Dermot'.

What about the Irish for Dermot- Diarmuid?

I'm not crazy about Dermot as a name. Love Cormac.
  • I agree that it sounds like a last name.

  • I don't care for it, but it's a fine name to use if you and DH like it.

  • Sounds like of like a synonym for doofus to me. (I know it's not). I like Cormac better too ... and I think of Cormac McCarthy, not the spices.
  • My first instinct is to pronounce it French, Derm-oh. Also, sounds like a skincare product, as "derm" = skin

I feel like Im trying to say Dermatitis without the -itis.

However, its not THAT bad. So if you like it go for it. I dont like it but I wouldnt side eye it either.

  • I really dislike it; it just has an odd sound to me. I agree with pp's that it sounds like it could be a synonym for doofus or something along those lines and also that it reminds me of dermatitis. Sorry!

  • I think of Dermott Mulroney, so I don't mind it. I like the sound of Desmond or Declan better, but Dermott is still a fine choice.
  • Meh. Something about it feels awkward, like, as PP said, I find myself wanting to drop the t sound or otherwise alter it because Dermot just doesn't feel right

  • I think this is a perfectly fine Irish name. Not my favorite, but I do like it.

  • Am I saying this right? Does it rhyme with "Kermit"? Because that's all I think of when I hear that name.
