Parenting after 35

So yeah...I lost my mind...I think? LOL

Well it is official I may be completely off my rocker.  On Friday we are picking up our brand new 8 week old PUPPY!!!!  Yeah cause with a 2 year old and a 6 month old who doesn't need more excitement in their life???  LOL I figure whats one more to add to the mix!  I have grown up with dogs.  I had 2 elder dogs when hubs and I got married and the first one had to be put down at the ripe old age of 16 when my daughter was about 5 months old.  The second old lady had to be put down last summer again, due to old age at the age of 15 and DD was then around 18 months old.  She misses having a dog to snuggle.  She goes over to my sister's house and hugs on her dog and just loves playing with him.  And come on a boy needs a dog!!!  It's gonna be a little hectic but I am so excited to have a dog again.  I again will have someone to eat up the crumbs the kids leave in their wake lol.

I haven't had a puppy in ages.  Any words of wisdom?  We are crate training and I am reading Cesar Millan's puppy book to refresh my memory.

  • Omg. I got rid of my last houseplant when we got close to #2 arriving! Lol. But I love dogs. Can't wait until things calm down and we can get one. But I think crate training is the best thing you can do! A dog needs a place to escape from two munchkins sometimes, so you are definitely doing a service for your newest family member. Also, puppy kindergarten!

  • @Geeps2, I love my dogs.  They were my babies before baby.  One is 12, the other is almost 4.  I could NOT imagine having a puppy with a 6 month old right now.  You are one brave woman!  But I guess since you're up in the middle of the night with a baby, taking a dog out to potty might work pretty well.  I am also completely for crate training.  Dogs need a safe place.  We crate trained our youngest and she will go to her crate if people come over and she doesn't feel like interacting anymore.  It's the one place they feel is their own.  I would just make sure that the baby doesn't try to get into the crate as well with the dog.

What kind of puppy are you getting?  I hope you post pics.  I freaking love puppies!  If we had the money, we could buy lots of land and adopt a bunch of dogs from the humane society to give them a loving home where they could run.
  • Can't imagine adding a puppy to that mix.  My boys are similar in age to yours (2.5 years and 7 months).  The older one keeps asking for a puppy for his birthday or walking around the house saying "I wish we had a doggy."  Maybe someday we will.  Good luck with your new puppy.

  • Oh hell no. LOL. I can barely handle my 2 kids... a puppy would be too much for this girl to handle! I am sure you are probably not as stressed as I am... Good luck!

  • We got our puppy I when was pregnant so he was 5 months old when dd was born.  We did crate in the beginning and my husband was in charge of getting up at night.  Honestly I thank god that part was over before the baby came.   We weren't comfortable with crating for too long so we didn't do it while we were at work.  It has been a ton of work and has been an adventure to say the least.   Ours is a golden retriever and was quite the chewer.  He is vastly improved at 1.5 years now but still chews and steals things.  Do you stay at home?  If so that will really help.

The great part is that dd loves the dog and they are growing up together.  The dog is really great with her I can tell they will be best buds :)

Well we have our puppy and so far so good.  He is a really good boy.  My 2 year old is in love and so are we.  He is a Bernese Mountain dog mix.  Let the games begin!

    YOU. ARE. NUTS.

Haha! Good luck is what I say! No way could I handle that right now.

Best word of advice, keep puppy away from baby toys or you can kiss them bye bye. :)

Thanks Shelly! He really is a great dog.  Every night while I get my 2 year old ready for bed I ask her what her favorite part of her day was.  Last night her response was "playing with my Wally."  She is in her glory.  She loves to play with him.  It is the sweetest thing to see.  I do not regret this decision at all.

  • Ugh....I have a 7 week old and my SO is begging me (like a little boy) for a dog.  Helllll to the no!

It didn't help that when we were out walking the other night, a cute little boxer puppy got loose from its yard and came running right toward us.  SO was all "It's a sign!!"
  • @geeps2, keep posting pics of the puppy doing cute stuff.  I love puppies!  I only wish I had more time and energy to spend with our dogs after LO goes to sleep for the night.
