Worst Nightmare at a Baby Shower

Tell me about your worst nightmare for a baby shower? Either a real experience from a past shower or something you would hate to see happen at your baby shower.

Re: Worst Nightmare at a Baby Shower

  • My favorite story from another shower is from a friend of mine. She had a shower in her home town and a friend begged to throw it and then proceeded to provide only food that the mother to be can not eat because of dietary restrictions and pregnancy!

The mother to be went home VERY hungry.

  • I know a lot of people like them, but shower games make me want to hork. I hate forced merriment. Let's just hang out, eat, drink and talk. Why do we need to play stupid games?
I completely agree. Being the reason for those stupid games would be my worst nightmare.

  • Mine would be the game "Guess Mama's Weight".  That'll get someone a big serving of throat punch.

Omg!! I would stab people. I didn't have much involvement in mine but was very firm with my BFF that we wouldnt be taking my belly measurements with string.

I find all shower games to be horrifying, but my worst shower story is from a friend's bridal shower. The hostess was really just using my friend's wedding as an excuse to have a tupperware party. She tried to make everyone buy something from her for the bride! I was so stinking mad!

So at my baby shower my sister had a game of "guess the candy bar" sounds innocent until you find out it's a melted candy bar smeared in a baby diaper. The party guests had to sniff and examine the melted remains and try to guess what it was... I was mortified....
I have never had to play this one but it always sounds like a horrible idea!

  • @FamousEA - that is disgusting - I have heard of that before too...gross

As far as games, they usually suck but my aunts did one that I loved, I'm sure it was on Pinterest or something.  Everyone got a card that had the start of a sentence (I hope you, Don't listen to, Be kind to) and the guest filled it in.  It is really adorable and they took everyones and bound them for a little book for me.  I love it!

I just saw an episode of 16 and Pregnant (I know, I know) and at her shower, they played a game where someone had a roll of toilet paper between their legs and someone else had a plunger - wooden stick facing outward - and they had to get the wooden handle inside the center of the toilet paper roll. You know....like having sex with these objects in front of everyone. Um WTF?! Now that's a horrible game.

Saw it! I was equally WTF about it

  • @TicketTuesday that is the best/worst shower story of all time!

  • I also am not a huge fan of shower games. I also honestly get so bored watching the guest of honor open their gifts.

My hostess luckily agrees and wants to throw a cookout where presents are brought unwrapped. We will put a tag on each gift with the gift givers name and display them on a table so those who want to can see cute baby stuff. The time will be spent mingling and celebrating instead. Only games like corn hole, hill billy golf, etc will be played and are totally optional.

I made it very clear no measure mom with string/ weight games. Thankfully everyone also knew me well enough not to do any of the food or diaper games. There was only one game at the one my mom did. Just a paper with baby words- layette, pacifier etc scrambled up. And one game at one of my others that was like nursery rhyme ish. Those don't really bother me. I also like the ones you make your own bingo card and whoever gets baby gift bingo first wins a prize ;)

  • My baby shower with my son was awful.  My mom and sister were supposed to host/throw it. They both live out of town and my sister could only come into town very early in my pregnancy. They had my shower at 16 weeks.

About a month before the shower my sister told me to order the invites. I thought I was supposed to order them and send them to her. Nope, she wanted me to order them, label them, and mail them. I did it to avoid a fight.
My sister was supposed to fly into Houston(mom's house) 3 days before the shower, then they were going to drive from Houston to me (Austin) the next day so they could be here a few days before the shower to set things up.  But that did not happen. They showed up the day before with no decorations in hand and nothing bought/prepped for food. I ended up having to make favors, food, and decorations for my own baby shower the night before. I was up until all night and so tired for my shower.
Then to top it off. My sister has a melt down during the shower (her marriage was breaking up) so she storms off to go upstairs to cry because "you have the perfect life and I don't".  My mom follows her and I am stuck hosting my own shower.
When they finally come back down my mom decides it is time for them to head home so they start tearing down the decorations and putting up the food while my guests are still there socializing.  Everyone was stunned and just looked at me.  They were yanking and tearing everything. It was so bizarre and the shower had only been going on for about 1.5 hours.  They packed up and left. My guest and I sat around for about 2 more hours just talking and catching up and laughing about the shower.

Needless to say, I wont forget that shower any time soon!

  • Ugh I hate shower games.  Especially the taste the baby food one.  I think most of the food looks absolutely disgusting and I have zero desire to eat it or even feed it to my kid. I actually refused to play this at one shower, which makes me a terrible guest but come on.  I don't want to eat pureed meat.

I also agree with the guess MTB size with a string & the candy bar diaper game are just in bad taste! They are super offensive & disgusting!

@TicketTuesday, you poor thing, that's just awful! I would have come to your rescue!  ;)

  • I was at two showers in January that were remarkable:

--Shower #1: the Mom-To-Be opened presents for...TWO HOURS! Like, I was done after the first hour, but my gift was almost last and I wanted to see her open it! Yes, it was insane and I was so tired. The shower lasted 3.5 hours and I was done after the second hour.

--Shower #2: the Grandma-To-Be wrote a SERMON about motherhood. OMG, snooze-fest! I couldn't believe it! And right before dessert time, too. I'm sad I didn't bring DD so I would have had an excuse to attend to her in another room.

  • Two hours to open gifts is insane @pinkshades05.  I have been to a few showers where the MTB had a helper with gifts they would get the unwrapping started so that the MTB just had to pull it out and show everyone to ooh and aww over.  It made the entire process go by very fast. I was so glad because she had about 30 guests!

@persephonerose‌ I'm so glad your guests stayed and you had some quality time with them. I hope you can look back on that shower and laugh now.

  • @pinkshades05‌ How many people were at the shower to have enough gifts to open for 2.5 hours? Showers in my family tend to rival weddings in size, and even I cant remember a MTB taking that long! Wow!
  • Yeah, I'm trying to make my gift opening 45 mins tops. That's my biggest fear since I don't like being the center of attention.
  • My SIL's BFF threw her a shower and she did the candy bars in the diaper (yak) then on top of that made me and two other ladies race to chug apple juice from a baby bottle. Of course I won....but definitely a wtf moment

  • My friend had a her baby shower and her mom asked a few of the closest friends to pitch in. I was supposed to bring the cutlery and plates and napkins. I didn't realize that buying any kind of colored party ware was so expensive especially since there were like 80 people there. And I guess because of the size of the shower and there being so many gifts it took like 3 hours for her to open all the presents. And since I was "helping out" with the shower I felt obligated to stay and help carry those 3 hours of presents to the car. I mean I would love to get lots of gifts but I don't want to make my guests sit through all that!

Oh my god, do people do that???? Like @dorothyzbornak97 said, I really do not like games. I made it clear to my best friend that I don't want them. In fact, I would really just like it to be a casual get together with my closet friends and family. Come in, have a mimosa, enjoy some food, relax and laugh. Good times!

  • Meh, I don't mind the games, especially ones done in-between gifts. I think a lot can be done in poor taste, but a lot are harmless.

A not close friend and her mother offered to throw me a shower for DD, just for our friends (my family had one in their home town). It was a really nice gesture, but I had no idea what was being planned. One of the games was a twist on the 'don't say baby' game - you weren't allowed to cross your legs, last man standing got a prize. Every picture has our friends sitting awkwardly with feet flat on the floor…

I don't hate the guess mama's size with string one, it was especially comical at the shower of our good friend who was due with triplets.

I guess my most nighmare-ish story was the shower that was basically planned and hosted by the mom-to-be.  Ostensibly it was planned by her mom, but it was pretty darned clear she was running it.  Mind you, it was a very small shower but still, pretty tacky IMO (but also sad that no one else stepped up to do it in the first place).

There were a good 40+ at this shower--but what took the longest were the gifts with about 50 things in them and EVERYTHING had to be shown off and passed around. It took forever...

  • Am I the only one who enjoys baby shower games?! I do have my exceptions...the candy bar diaper one IS a waste of candy. But overall I like to play little stupid corny games to pass the time. I am also not a fan of small talk with strangers so maybe that is why I like to keep busy!
I don't like watching the mom open her presents for more than 30 minutes.Or when they read the cards out loud *yawn*. I also am not a fan of co-ed showers. Oh or when you play a game and you receive a "prize" that is really a gift to give to the mom to be. That one really confuses me.
Yup...but I am the odd one out who loves her some baby shower games! :)

I also like games. Although in my group of friends we play more word games than some of the traditional ones. I hate the diaper and baby food ones!

  • My shower was a complete surprise and it was my husband's job to get me there. He's a moron when it comes to these things si he told me we were going to a Chinese Auction. I threw on jeans and a sweater, put my hair in a ponytail and went on my merry old way. When I walked in, I was mortified. I had a cute dress picked out for my shower and planned in my head how I'd look. I was the center of attention and looked like a bum the whole time in front of 75 women.
