To wake or not to wake?

So I'm a FTM and I have a question. My LO took a 3oz bottle at 9pm. Fell asleep at 10:30pm, and has been asleep since. It's 2am now, so it's been 5hrs since his last bottle and he is still sleeping. He usually goes 3-4hrs in between feedings. So would you wake your sleeping LO to feed, or would you count your blessings and let LO wake up on his own while you go back to sleep?

Re: To wake or not to wake?

  • Is your baby back up to his birth weight? I think that's the general criteria for letting them sleep vs. waking them. DD went 6 hours between feedings last night (usual is 3) so I just enjoyed my sleep!

  • Yes he is over his birth weight. He's a good eater!! I'll try to go back to sleep, and let him tell me when he wants to eat. My DH is currently at work and he told me to let him sleep, and that I should use this time to sleep myself.

Thanks for letting me know it's okay to let baby sleep.
  • Yep, let him sleep!

If its the middle of the night, I'd say let him sleep. Enjoy it!

And that's okay. He let you know when it was time. Do a happy dance, he's sleeping more!

Team no wake during the night here! DD is 4 weeks and has been sleeping from 10pm to 4am with a last bottle around 8:30/9pm.
During the day I wake to feed every 3-3.5hrs though.

  • My pedi said that since dd was gaining weight to let her sleep (12 days old). She slept 5.5 hours last night. They need their sleep as much as they need milk at this point. :)

  • At our 2 week appt last week since LO was past his birth weight pediatrician said we could wake him every 3 hours during the day (we Exclusively formula feed) and then let LO sleep as much as he wants during night.

The hospital was obsessive about waking him to feed him, but he'd just fall asleep. However, our Pedi saidto just let him sleep.  He's gaining weight...more weight then he was gaining at the hospital. He eats better if he wakes up on his own.  We can usually get from midnight til about 5:30.  I'll take that!
