interview outfit?

This dress hits right above the knee. It has cap sleeves and a blue belt to show off the waist line. I am pairing it with silver earrings (shown), my Pandora bracelet, and a citrine pendant (is a bright yellow stone) also wearing matte silver dress sandals.

Ps it's navy and yellow the pic is a bit hard to tell.

What do you think? Does it look ok? Tell the truth!

Its a super cute dress, but I personally wouldn't wear something above the knee to an interview.

You think i should go slacks?

  • if this interview is for a school position, don't wear this dress. if it's for a more laid back position, you can pair this with black tights, black pumps, and a blazer.

do not wear sandals to an interview.

  • It's hard to make it out in the pic-- it looks almost like a party dress to me?

My go to interview outfit is a pencil skirt, a tucked in button down (usually white, but I also like banker's blue), and either black or nude pumps.

If you don't have a pencil skirt, sub it for a sheath dress in a conservative color.

You can personalize with a scarf, fun jewelry or an interesting bag.

  • Ok. I will dig in the closet and see what i can find. I don't have a pencil skirt but i do have "smart" slacks i would wear black flats and a neutral top?

I just wanted to be colorful and inviting looking since it was an elementary school.

This pic is hard but i promise i would wear it to church any day of the week ;) True on the sandals flats would be best...
  • I always think it's best to err on the side of conservative-- esp since the job is administrative, KWIM?  Dressy black pants and a dressy/ conservative top is fine, IMO.

I think there's more leeway in creative fields RE interview attire.

I would even suggest that you pick up a pencil skirt just to have (even if you decide not to wear it for the interview).  It's an extremely useful item to have in your closet if you need to wear business attire ever-- and you can also dress it up with a sparkly top/ fancy shoes and jewelry for a date night or a semi formal party.

  • I would stick with dress pants (black, navy blue or gray) and a work appropriate top.

    I ditto @helenahhandbasket suggesting a pencil skirt.

I have NO heels. Can i wear flats with a pencil skirt?

Also what are you doing tomorrow morning? Can you just come dress me? I would probably have a better chance :)

Oh Jack.  I no understand "no heels".

OK-- I amend-- go out and buy yourself a pencil skirt and heels.  You may not wear flats with a pencil skirt.  That's an order.

ILY, but please get your ass to the mall.

  • Jack-- I am sure the flats/ dress pants/ blouse combo is fine.

When you have some free time (haha), take yourself shopping and buy a pair of heels.  They are not all super uncomfortable.  I actually have a lot of love for Nine West lately (which my boss would think was blasphemy for me to say-- since they are a "competing" brand for us).

Not Steve currently, but I did intern there.  LOL!

It's a brand that started as a clothing brand that branched out to accessories.

I like the dress a lot, but you know your industry better than us.Go with your gut.

@Helenahhandbasket‌ I have a pair of trusty black Prada pumps that are going on 10 years old. I get them re-heeled every few years, but their mostly my interview/important meeting shoes. I love them.

I've never worked in an industry where suits would be appropriate, at least not regionally. My first big girl job was with an apparel company in LA. We dressed trendy, super trendy, or like an idiot. Usually a mix of the three. I miss those days. I was in advertising media in the Bay Area, so suits not appropriate. Now I'm in marketing and no one wears suits except sometimes for our sales guys when they have to meet with Walmart reps.
