TTM about swaddling at bedtime

LO is closing in on four months and we still swaddle him for bed. I have tried a couple times to not swaddle and he just waves his arms so much that it wakes him up or keeps him awake. Even in the saddle he eventually gets his arms out. Does your LO still sleep with a swaddle? Any success stories on getting them used to sleeping without it? How long did it take before LO was back to their normal sleep routine?

Re: TTM about swaddling at bedtime

  • I'm curious to hear responses on this. LO is 3+ mos (14 wks) and we still swaddle. We bought the large swaddlemes and she fights to get out. We haven't tried a night without one yet, because I'm scared! I think we have to stop swaddling when they learn to roll over?

  • We still swaddle. I fear the day we have to stop because naptime without swaddle does not go well.

  • We stopped cold turkey and she actually slept better without it! She learned to roll onto her belly shortly after and is now a stomach sleeper.
  • We swaddled with arms out until about a week ago when our air conditioning stopped working and I thought LO would be too hot.  Now he seems used to sleeping without his sleep sack.  (And our AC is fixed.  Yay.)

If baby isn't rolling yet, I don't see a need to quit swaddling. My DS sleeps really well with the swaddle, so I'm going to keep doing it till he can roll.

LO has been rolling onto her side a ton the past few days, so tonight is our first one-arm-out night! I'm terrified!

  • Don't know how much help this will be now, but just in case... We swaddled arms in for about two days. Then one arm in, one out, for another few days, then both arms out by the end of her first week. At about six weeks we switched her out from the swaddle to the sleep sack, and have had no issues. Now at 3.5 months, she finds her thumb and will sooth herself back to sleep without crying. She's been sleeping steadly from 9:30 at night until 8am for about a month now. I ebf during the day, then she gets a bottle of formula before bed, which I'm sure helps with the sleeping. Hope something in there helps someone...

  • I stopped swaddling when LO outgrew the swaddle sacks. I just got my new A&A sleep sack from Amazon today and it's beautiful! I didn't notice much of a change in his sleep when we stopped swaddling.

  • We were scared to stop swaddling, too. DD took ALL the 5 S's to soothe to sleep. At 11 weeks we started to transition out of the swaddle 1 arm at a time. Now we do sleep sacks and pj's and she is doing pretty well!

We stopped swaddling this week. DS was breaking out of every swaddle contraption we owned, and was getting too mad to settle in the woombie anymore. He's also a rolling/scooting machine now.

We started him in the Merlin's Magic Sleepsuit (https://www.magicsleepsuit.com). Works great! It muffles his movements and keeps him from wacking his face and waking himself up.

We've now had LO right arm (the crazier arm) out for 3 nights and she's slept through every night! She was already sttn, but would usually start kicking and thrashing and fighting the swaddle around 4:30, at which point I'd move her to the rnp for a couple more hours. I haven't had to do that the last 3 mornings -- I'm amazed! We'll put the left arm out too in a few days.

  • I came in 1 morning and found him on his stomach.  We moved to arms out in the Swaddleme that night.  It worked without any issues.  I think we're moving to sleep sacks this week, but even the smalls still look so big on him.
