Baby name tacky?

My husband and I are really liking the name: Luca William. We do not have an Italian last name, and someone commented that Luca sounds tacky with an American last name. Comments or thoughts? William is a family name, but we didn't want it first. Thank you!!

  • Thank you! We will go with what we like, but I we aren't telling everyone the name yet so I wanted to bounce the name for opinions anonymously! =)

@Idani, I am actually Italian and my family is very Italian, but my husband is not. Hence, the last name consideration.

Italian or no, Luca is a legitimate name, and if you love it, use it!  I think it's a great name.

  • That's totally silly that someone told you that! My nephew's name is Luca, and people are always remarking to my sister that they love his name.
  • I love it! Italian or not, it is a legitimate name so if you like it, use it!
  • The only Luca I've ever know is from the Netherlands, so for me it holds no particular ethnic distinction. As PP have said, go with what you like. It's not a crazy, out there name, certainly not one people would side eye, American last name or not.

  • Luca is becoming more popular and I know 3 moms who have a "Luca" and only one of which is Italian.  It's a great name!
  • I just read your second comment...so you ARE Italian.  I understand you want the name to sound right with the last name.
People don't pay much attention to that.  It's nice that he'll have a bit of heritage in both.

  • What's tacky is telling somebody that their name of choice is tacky...

  • I'm not Italian, but when I hear Luca I don't think Italian. Either way, name your child what YOU like!

  • I felt the same way. We have a very German/Scandinavian girl's name picked out to go with our very British last name. At first I wondered if this would be weird, but then I thought "oh well, people name their babies after cars and crappy movies, so our combo isn't so bad." If you love the name, it's probably meant to be :)
  • I love it!

Our favorite name is super Greek (like, I've only met one person with it, where I heard the name in the first place, and they are 100% Greek) and we are 100% not Greek. in any way. I say if you love a name, use it! It's not tacky

  • The name sounds cute! From my experience with this whole baby name picking thing, EVERYONE is gonna have something negative to say about all the names you choose, I say if you and your s/o like and agree to the name, use it!
