Stay with babies @ hospital

So I've read a few posts now about one or both babies having to stay at the hospital after birth. When this happens, do you and/or your husband stay with them 24/7 or come and go as you please?
I assume they don't set you up in a new room (especially if your still recovering from a C section) and stay until both you and the babies are ready to leave.

I stayed 4 nights, which was the max stay for a c-section. H, my healthy twin, stayed in the room with me and we left together. While we were there, we visited E in the NICU nursery several times a day. After we were discharged, we visited her twice a day (it was difficult to coordinate because H couldn't go into the nursery after he was discharged). When E was transferred to a Level 3 NICU, one of us went once a day because it was over an hour away and again, H couldn't go in the room.

They aren't going to let you stay in the hospital as a patient just because your babies are there. However, both NICUs that E was in did not have visiting hours. Parents could be there at any time and all day and night if they wanted.

  • My boys were in the NICU for 13 days so they did not room in w me after they were born. I went to visit them several times a day while I was there. I was discharged without them which sucks so badly.

I have an older son as well, so I spent my days at the NICU w the babies and my evenings at home w my big one (he goes to FT daycare/preschool).

We were lucky - their stay was short and they were discharged together. For a bit we thought we might get one but not the other and the logistics of that would have been very difficult.

  • I gave birth on Tuesday and I was discharged on Friday while the kids were discharged on Sunday. They never went to the NICU, but needed a few additional tests - jaundice, hearing. The hospital kept me in the room and the kids roomed with me. If they had run out of rooms, I would have had to leave. The kids were both born generally healthy though.

  • My girls were in the NICU for about 2 weeks. I stayed in the hospital 4 days and was discharged without them. I had that first week off work, so I had someone drive me to see them during the day and I'd be home with DS at night and DH would visit them after work. I didn't see my DH until 8pm each night which sucked, but he wanted to see his girls too. The second week, I started working PT and I would go after I was done. Hailey was discharged on Tuesday and they let me know I could bring her up to the hospital with me to visit Harper. They were even going to keep her bassinet so she could sleep. But, Harper was then discharged the next day, so I never had to worry about taking nor & leaving the ore for an extended period. Our hospital also has a Ronald McDonald room that I could have signed up to stay in, but with DS I wasn't sure how to coordinate it because he wasn't allowed to stay in the hospital mad I didn't qualify for the actual Ronald McDonald house as I live too close. In our NICU we could come & go as we wanted. Same with the peds floor when they were moved up I actually could have stayed overnight in their room, there was a shower and all, but again with DS, I didn't know how to make it work. Just glad both their stays were short. I was planning on a MUCH longer stay based on how early they were. (sorry there's no formatting, on ipad).

  • My babies only had to say for 7 days, and my OB advised me to not spend ALL my time at the hospital, and to spend some time at home getting rest. My DH and I would go visit a couple times a day for feedings (the hospital was only 15 minutes away). There wasn't a lot for us to do other than feed them, do a little kangaroo time and then let them sleep. I felt kinda helpless after a few hours at a time in the hospital. We didnt spend the night there or anything, I was glad to be able to get some sleep at home for that week. I sure needed it for the weeks ahead! I also got to spend time getting the house ready and such. You should do whatever you feel comfortable with.

I stayed in a home away from home place that was right beside the hospital.   They were in the NICU for 2 weeks and I lived to far away from the hospital.  I was pumping and taking the milk over and spent most of my days up there in the NICU.  I am so thankful that they had a place for me to stay!  I can't imagine being over an hour away from them : (  They both were discharged on the same day!

  • My cousin just had a baby a few weeks ago.  For some reason he had to stay in NICU a few extra days, they let her stay in her hospital room until he was discharged, she just didn't have any medical care from the doctors or nurses.  I didn't expect it, but it was great they gave her that option.

The first week one of my girls roomed in while i had a 5 day stay. We saw baby b in NiCU daily for a few hours. After discharge Between my health, a family member's death and funeral and hubbys job we only got up to see baby B 1-2 hrs a day for the second week. I missed her and felt I didnt really start to bond with her until she got home. It was only two weeks though and she is healthy and happy now.

My Baby A was in-pt for 12 days, Baby b for 6' I was an in-pt for 5. My hospital has Guest rooms so we got to stay for all 12 days and babies brought to us. Since Baby a was only a grower and feeder she would be in NICU during the night but would stay with us and her sister during the day in our room!

Our NICU is also 24/7 for parents, so you can go at anytime; however, there's no sleep area.  You'd just be sitting up with them the whole time.  They do have Kangaroo Care rooms/chairs, that you could get more privacy for a bit.  Once the babies are ready for discharge, they have rooms for parents to practice overnight with the babies, if you feel necessary.  You stay in there with them in case any emergencies should arise, you're right by the NICU and have help immediately.  This is just for that boost of confidence if you're uneasy taking your preemie home.
