Workouts

So, I've been in a Pilates class for over a year and love it. Tonight was brutal, though. I could hardly do the poses, except the push-ups, surprisingly. Any thoughts about continuing Pilates during pregnancy? I haven't been given any restrictions and one of the women in class is due in a month...she now modifies most of the moves. I know the instructor would help modify moves as I needed to. Just looking for others' advice and experience.

Re: Workouts

  • I've always continued my regular workout routines until the end-- and modified as physically necessary. For example, crunches become impossible at some point ;)  Don't over exert yourself or do anything that makes you uncomfortable, but it's totally healthy to continue to build your strength and break a sweat! If a move is too difficult, ask the instructor for a modification.

  • I run and lift and will continue to do so throughout the pregnancy with modifications as necessary. Listen to your body and adjust when needed. You will have good days and bad days just like before you were pregnant.

  • Yeah I was told to listen to my body. On a side note, if you're in the Boston area- you can search specifically for prenatal classes or specific instructors, personal trainers and coaches on my website, FitYap.com :) (sorry for the shameless plug, but I'm proud of my first baby as I like to call it). We'll be expanding nationally in the near future :)
  • Thanks for the insight! I know I will be better off staying active, just wasn't sure about core exercise and pregnancy.

Yup this.  I run and dance, and will continue both (I have to dance, it's my job).  I have already needed to modify my dancing a bit, running has been the same (though my pace has dropped). Listen to what your body says and you should be fine!

  • I"m running and swimming through the pregnancy. Some days are just plain hard. Sometimes 5 miles feels like the last 5 miles of a marathon. I slow down and listen to my body. You can continue to do the things you were doing before, just accept that sometimes it's not going to be easy and you may have to modify or not be able to do as much as you planned.

  • I hike and rock climb and plan on continuing until I physically can't anymore.  I know I might get a lot of feedback for the rock climbing, but I've done a lot of research and know what I feel comfortable with.  Listen to your body and experts.

I think that's awesome that you are keeping up the rock climbing!! I was skiing until my 6th month of pregnancy (until my winter coat stopped fitting, lol) and people gave me shit for that. I followed my comfort level. I hate that some people vilify pregnant women for these choices, as though we are no longer full individuals able to make our own choices and risk assessments for our bodies.

I did Zumba last time up till 31 weeks. Moves were modified as I got further sling. And I didn't do certain songs if I felt off

  • I Crossfit and my OB gave me the green light to continue. When we do timed workouts I am slower now because I need to stop when I get short of breath. I don't how you ladies that run manage to do it. The only thing the OB advised was to be careful with sit ups. I just sub in planks. Working out is helping me feel fat
  • Agree with what the other girls had to say- You can continue working out just modify as needed. Don't push yourself too hard. But being active during pregnancy is much better for you than not exercising at all :)

I'm currently still working out exactly the same as before.  I've had 3 races so far and have a few more coming up (including a 12 miler).

I say do what you have been doing and listen to you body.  My mile pace time has slowed down by about a minute but I'm ok with that.

~after 34 cycles we finally got our 2nd little bundle of joy~

  • 6 weeks and feeling pretty good with workouts! "Once I convince myself to do it!" Competing in two triathlons one on father's day and the other on July 13! My swim and bike I anticipate to be around normal, my running has seems to slow down a little though. Excited to compete with my little partner :) I lift weights regularly as well and plan to do so as long as my body agrees with it. Fit momma :)
  • As others have said, listen to your body. One day you may feel miserable and the next it may be like pre-pregnancy. I'm still running and lifting. My pace is about 30 sec/mile slower than before, but I feel good during and even better after I run. I'd say keep doing exercises that are enjoyable for you!
