UGG, She's Breech!!

We just got back from the OB and they said she is butt down. They gave me two options. One they can try and flip her from the outside at 37 weeks. They said this only has a 50% success rate and the other 50% is an emergency C-Section because of the water breaking or placenta detaching. The other option is doing a scheduled C-Section at 39 weeks. My husband is not comfortable with the flip and wants to do the scheduled C-Section. Has anyone else had to deal with this and if so what did you do.

Yup I am 37 weeks today. We are not doing the version due to the reasons you mentioned. To us not worth the risk.

You can try acupuncture chiropractic (Webster method) spinning babies.

I personally did not try anything. My girl has been breech pretty much the entire pregnancy. I figure if she has not turned maybe there is a reason she has not.

I have a scheduled c section for June 18. Edd June 19.

Check out spinningbabies.com - lots of good resources there on flipping a breech - you still have time! I personally would opt for the version were I in your shoes though.

I'm not sure if your OB mis-spoke, but the risk of emergency C-section with an ECV is definitely not 50%! The most up-to-date systematic review puts the risk of complication around 6%, with serious complications (placental abruption, stillbirth) being 0.24% (Source) Another recent, credible study puts the risk of emergency C-section around 0.5% (Source) Maybe what she meant to say is that the other 50% undergo a scheduled C-section, due to the fact that the baby remains breech?

My first LO was breech until 37 weeks. I tried all the home remedy tricks to try to get him to flip...ice packs, peppermint oil, music, Spinning Babies. Then I had an unsuccessful and very uncomfortable ECV at 37.5 weeks. Just before 38 weeks, I went to the chiropractor for the first time during that pregnancy and, lo and behold, he flipped that night! I was so shocked, but it worked for me.

I think if I were to be in that position again, I would try the ECV again...but not until after the chiropractor. I understand why people choose not to do it, though, and it's a very personal decision. Good luck!

I agree with @MississippiCatfish‌ - your statistics are way off. I tried an ECV and it didn't work, but I had no complications. I would definitely try it again.

I'm 31 weeks and my baby is breech as well (has been the whole time). My husband and I have decided against trying the EVC due to the risks. Instead, we are trying the spinning techniques, acupuncture and chiro in a few weeks.

Sorry if this is a hijack, at what stage in pregnancy should the baby turn to head down position anyways? I'm 30w2d and was trying to tell hubs that I can still feel the baby up at the top of my abdomen and that I hope he would turn soon to avoid a breech. He spazzed and said that we have 2 months left ( 8-| he hopes) and that there was no need to be worried about it.

...I really should be writing a book along the lines of "S&*# DH says to me when I'm pregnant"

Just because baby hasn't flipped doesn't mean they won't later.

This. I had an ECV on Wednesday and your stats are wrong. It was not successful but I certainly have not had any side effects and would definitely try it again if in the same situation. It is a choice for you and your partner to make, but for DH and I it was a no brainer to try. It was preformed in the hospital, our DR has a good success rate with it, the baby and I were monitored the entire time and IF something happened we were right were we needed to be. And FWIW, it was not painful at all just slightly uncomfortable.

@tdonatoni This is so bizarre to me because (and I only say this here because OP has decided not to have one) other than giving birth, it was the most painful experience of my life! I've heard others say the same, but also plenty of people say it was just barely uncomfortable. So crazy how different it can be:)

My first LO was breech. We opted for scheduled c-section due to the risks. I tried other at-home exercises to turn him, but even at 39w5d, he was still breech. No regrets now.
