Baby B measuring 22%bigger at 26 weeks

Hey y'all, just want to know if any of y'all have experienced 1 of the babies being significantly larger than the other and if so what was the outcome of it. I went to the MFM yesterday and he said both boys are relatively healthy looking but A is 1 lb 9 oz and B is 2 full lbs. the dr said that right this moment there isn't anything he wants me to do except see him back in 3 weeks instead of 4, but if they continue to grow apart in weight ill be put on bedrest. I should mention that originally my primary OB thought they might share a placenta, but it was later determined its more likely they have 2 placentas that are fused together. Just looking for some experience either way! Thanks ladies!

I could be wrong, but I thought that if they each had their own placenta, a growth discrepancy was not as big of a deal.  This would be because it is basically like having two separate pregnancies in one body; no one is taking away from the other.  If they shared a placenta, then it is a bigger deal because it can mean the smaller twin is getting less.
My baby B was bigger than A for weeks (maybe like up to a 1/4-1/2 lb difference), and now they are estimated to only be 2 oz apart, and A is bigger.  It can definitely change.  They have separate placentas, too.

The mFM dr isn't 100% sure they have separate placentas. His exact words were "we can't know for sure until you give birth and we can see it" so he's being cautious. But he did say they start to worry if one baby is 20% larger or more than the other.

Eta baby B is in the 56 percentile and A is in the 26th percentile.
  • Mine have been 23% different at my last 2 appts. At 25w3d mine were 1lb14oz & 1lb7oz. My MFM said it's hard to truly diagnose growth restriction. My smaller one could just be a small baby or the difference could be due to her being female. I think as long as they keep growing at a consistent rate then the MFMs don't worry as much. FX baby A's growth is good at your next u/s!

  • I am expecting b/g twins, so we know they have separate placentas. At 26 weeks, there was a 17% discordance. I was sent to a MFM a little over two weeks later. Their equipment showed an 18.5% discordance. They scheduled a recheck for two weeks, but the MFM isn't worried as long as they both show growth and stay on the charts.

I do happen to be on BR, but that was for IU and shortening cervix.
  • My baby B consistently measured larger at ultrasounds; in the end/at delivery she was only 2 ounces larger than her sister.

At 27 weeks my Baby B was almost half a pound less than Baby A. I was worried too. Went today at 31 weeks and now they are only 2 ounces apart. Baby B caught up nicely! :)

  • The 20% difference is in body weight, not in percentile for doctors to be worried. I had my measurements today and was freaking out because one is 70th and the other is 40th.

My doctor explained that there is only 7oz difference which is about 10%, so no need to be scared.

Hope that made some sense, I am sleep deprived :)
  • My b/g twins had over a 20% discrepancy from 32w on. A (girl) was born 5lb 14oz B (boy)was born 8lbs 1oz. The MFM was a little concerned that A was growth restricted, but it was determined that they were growing at the same rate so that was ok. A was just a petite little girl.

I'm 28 weeks with mono/di twins, and we've had some growth discrepancies.  My MFM said they only get concerned with it if they're sharing the placenta, but I can understand that yours is playing it safe since you're not 100% sure.

At 16 weeks, growth difference was 8%.
At 20 weeks, growth difference was 17% (this is when they became concerned, and I was placed on modified bed rest).
At 24 weeks, growth difference was 9% (bed rest was less strict).
At 28 weeks, growth difference was 15%.

Now that we've made it further along, they're not so concerned.  They think that both girls were "meant" to be big babies (Baby B is already 3 lbs, 2 oz while Baby A is 2 lb, 10 oz).  However, Baby A has an SUA (single umbilical artery), so it's harder for her to get nutrients.  We're now doing growth scans every 2 weeks JUST TO BE SURE.  But they aren't too concerned.  They also want it under 20%, but that's per the mono/di protocol.

It does make sense, but from what I understand their weights are 22% apart. I just added the percentiles in for good measure and to give as much info as possible. Thank you for giving me your experience though;) I appreciate the feedback. And btw it made total sense, I hope you get more sleep soon though!

One of my mo di twins was IUGR. Since there is a chance they share a placenta, make sure they are checking your fluid levels and doing Dopplers on the cords to check flow to the little baby. I had scans twice a weekand then was hospitalized for more monitoring.
