WWYD... Work/DH related (long!)

Soo.... I'm seriously considering going to work for DH. He has a small business that has been growing exponentially the past few years and this is his best year ever. He made more money last month than I will make in a year. BUT it's not always like that and his industry is kind of feast or famine and is weather dependent.

We have two years of my salary in savings.

I'm worried about:
- our family being fully dependent on his business
-us butting heads about how things should be done in the office
-giving up my good career that I worked really damn hard for

Pluses:
-making my own hours and probably working 30ish/week
-finally wrangling his bookkeeping under control like it should be
-freeing him up to do more business development and win more contracts
-I'm a CPA and could always do bookkeeping and taxes on the side for $$ if I want

I dunno. I hate to lose my independence, but I think he really needs my help to continue to grow.

Also, I would ask him to give me 50% equity.

WWYD?

My office consists of my boss and his wife. They work really well together, but mainly because they can yell at each other about office stuff and then everything's cool by the time they go home. I think a successful marriage/business relationship depends on the parties' ability to let things go. If I worked with my husband, we'd be divorced by the end of the year. Also, would you be dealing with any bitterness if you gave up your career to work for/with him?

@SV917‌ We put things behind us pretty well and he has said he will defer to me on things that I have control over. Some things he does drives me bonkers like paying contractors in cash from the ATM. WTH?! How am I supposed to track that?
@joelies Ideally it would work as you described it. My H spends all day in the field and I'd be in the office. We'd rarely see each other, but he would be asking me for stuff all day so we'd have a lot of communication.

I wish there was a way to do an experimental run at it for a few months without burning my bridges at work (just started a new job!).

  • Do you love your current job? All money aside, which job would make you more excited to go to work every day?

  • Knowing my DH's business ethics, and how well we work together and our communication skills, I would. I hope you guys work this out so that everyone is happy and your DH's business continues to thrive. Congratulations to him for doing so well.

You guys are the best. So much to think about. I'll be back when DS is asleep.

I'd be more excited to work for DH. I take a lot of pride in the work that he does and how he's grown his business. I also get excited when I think about it getting even bigger. I mean, 10-15 years from now, The sky's the limit.

My job pays well and I like my colleagues, but I'm just a cog in the machine.

You keep using the words "for DH" is that one of your issues? If you make this decision I think it should be a partnership legally so that you are protected.

FWIW I left accounting (big firm public accounting to be exact) to work with DH and then went to law school and haven't looked back.  DH and I don't work together anymore (they hired an accountant and I do their legal work as an independent contractor) and it's probably a good thing because we get on each other's nerves.  Our personalities are just a little much to work together 24/7, but we did it for about 2 years without issues.

I haven't had any issues translating that position into corporate accounting.  In fact they often like to see the additional background in other areas of business.  But if you are in public accounting I know it can be hard to get back into.

I say do whichever you will like more day-to-day.  It sounds like you have enough savings to float the famine months.

Personally I like working part-time-ish (about 24-30 hours a week) and for myself because I can set my own hours within reason around N.  I love being able to take time off when I'm not busy (like 2 weeks around Christmas and a week or two in the summer) just to spend time with my boys.
