S/O WCM - How?

Sorry if this has been discussed already! But how are you planning on offering WCM? With a bottle? Sippy (straw or spout)? Regular cup?

Is there a studied best/preferred way to do so, as far as developmental skills go?

BTDT, what did you do?

Re: S/O WCM - How?

  • Not close to giving WCM yet.  A Straw cup is better than a spout sippy for oral development.  It uses different muscles in the face and mouth and it helps avoid problems with speech.  A regular cup is far better but way messier to learn from.  We are just doing a straw cup and no spouts.

  • DD drinks water from the straw sippy only. She does not like the spout. When I start to wean, I will give her wcm in the straw sippy.

  • Liam can use a straw and does well with something thick like smoothie. But just water he has trouble getting the liquid up the straw.

  • We've been trying to transition from bottle to cup.   Pedi said we should be done with bottle by one year.   So, if we are off the bottle by a year, he's be drinking from a sippy or straw cup (we use both).    Right now, we do a morning and bedtime bottle.  The two in between are from a sippy/straw cup.

I cannot fathom weaning off the bottle in the next 5 weeks! I feel like he doesn't get enough when he drinks out of the sippy cup, and even after weaning from the bottle, they are still supposed to get quite a bit of milk.

Won't he be hungry?? These are the things that keep me up at night ;)

I think I'll drop the morning and afternoon bottles (since my supply is shot to shit and those are usually only 2-3 oz anyway) and replace those with sippies. I'll still give him the pre-nap and pre-bed bottles, and slowly wean off those.

These babies are getting too big!
  • When I transitioned DS1, I first got him from BM and a bit of formula onto WCM, in the bottle.

Then once he was on all WCM I worked on weaning the bottle, to a straw sippy (I had also read about straw sippys helping with verbal development--DS is extremely verbal, so I'm sure it helped him at least a little bit!).  I plan to do the same with LO here in a few weeks.

  • Sippy cup with a spout. I hate cleaning the straw sippy. I'm not sure that delivery of WCM has anything to do with developmental enrichment?

Hmm interesting. Abby has been drinking from a straw since 9 months & we still had speech muscle issues. Go figure. :-??

  • DS turned 11 months yesterday and we are going to start offering WCM in a straw sippy this weekend. He does okay with water in the sippy. I just bought two containers of formula and those will probably be our last, if he does okay with taking WCM in the sippy. DS seems to be weaning himself from the bottle already. I won't put WCM in the bottle because I think it helps with the transition, I did the same with DD and she was pretty easy to wean.

  • With DD1, we introduced the sippy with water before a year and then got her on WCM by a year. She also took a pacifier until almost 2 (although just for sleeping and in the car). She was stringing sentences together at 18 months, so no speech delay there. With DD2, she takes a bottle rarely and drinks water from the sippy like a champ. My only concern would be the temperature change with WCM. She is used to body temp and I am not going to be warming up milk for her. Hoping the water she has been drinking is okay. For those concerned about milk intake. Yogurt and cheeses count towards calcium intake and the amount of dairy they need drops, so I wouldn't be overly concerned. Discuss at the year check up.

  • *and too add, I am still waiting on DD2 to say mama or something. She doesn't even take a paci. I am not worried. Kids develop so differently

    This x1000.

    And also this:
Screw the 12 month "no more bottles" rule.
1-year-old still taking 5 bottles (of BM creamsicle) a day over here. He has never done anything with a sippy cup except chew on it and throw it on the ground. I am giving him frozen BM until it runs out, and then I'll give him WCM any way he'll take it.

Also, since it's sort of on topic - my pedi said yesterday unless you have reason to suspect a dairy intolerance, the only reason to transition slowly is taste. We'll be trying straight WCM a little while before my BM is gone; if he likes it, we won't worry too much about mixing (I'm kind of worried that he'll only take it in orange Pedialyte creamsicle form after all his creamsicle BM bottles....:( ).

This kid may not have a lot of bowel, but he has plenty of guts!
DS born at 34 weeks with (surprise!) gastroschisis turned short bowel syndrome.
131 days in the NICU, 7 trips to the OR, G-button, daily TPN....
We are impatiently awaiting the day we can say goodbye to his girlfriend Ivy for good.

We use a sippy with straw and cut out bottles. For me it's just easier to cut out the bottle earlier and he isn't bothered by it. If he was attached to his bottle and seemed upset then I would probably reconsider and keep the bottle for a bit longer. He gets milk in his high chair and water throughout the day. A sippy of water is always available to him. This is what has been working for us and also worked for his older brother.

We will have the same thing. I want to give DD the best possible chance to avoid as many problems that I can. Our PT and most of the Ds community recommends straw over spout. So I just pass the info along. :)

Zoli straw cup here. She never took to a sippy cup so we just skipped it.

I haven't done enough research on my own yet, but my pedi said he recommends starting weaning, but not planning on getting completely off the bottle until 16 months.. supposedly studies are showing that when the bottle is stopped at a year, the toddler doesn't get enough nutrients/milk from the cups at first..

Thx for this thread all good info!

  • Thank you, thank you, thank you! I'm going to start weaning around 11 months and milk will go in sippys.

This is what we're doing. She'll drink BM any way it comes, but WCM must be in a bottle, heated to precisely body temp :-/ Right now, she drinks "half and half" when we're apart, once I stop pumping and she moves to just WCM during the day, we'll switch over to her straw cup (which she likes for water).

I don't put a lot of weight on your source. I used sippies and straw cups, with sippies predominating because they leak less, for both my boys. My oldest, who quit nursing at 9 mo is very articulate. my younger son who nursed until 15 mo has a speech disorder. I don't think sippy vs. straw had anything to do with that. (Besides I've never hear you have to give water at every meal once you start introducing solids. I continued to nurse before or after offering solids, I didn't offer water at all.

OP, I have transitioned to WCM a few weeks before the 12 mo mark. With DS1, who was exclusively FF by then, I mixed the two together  for a few days, but he didn't have any problem with the taste. With DS2, who was still nursing, I just offered straight WCM and it was fine. Like many PPs I began by introducing the cup during the day at meals and kept the bottle/nursing session before naps/bedtime/morning. The bedtime session/bottle was the last to go with each of them.

DD likes drinking water out of my glass. She doesn't really keep it all down much though. I have to supplement my nursing with formula, which I prefer to offer in a sippyrather than a bottle. She is slowly getting it.

Also, even once they have mastered drinking from a regular cup, most parents still use some sort of sippy or cup with lid just for peace of mind. Accidents happen a lot.

I am having this debate in my mind, because I am working on bottle weaning now.

I know that he drinks better from a bottle than a sippy, but he is still getting the recommended amount of milk. He is not allowed to have a bottle in the one year old room, so he's on sippies or straws all day now, except for morning and night bottle. I'll drop the morning bottle tomorrow morning. My fear with still having a bottle feed is that he'll almost reverse cycle and hold out for the night bottle feed. If he's on a sippy 100% of the time, he will just drink without hoping for the bottle.

    Anybody have any advice?

  • The second I gave ds1 wcm he was so happy. He didn't care what I gave it to him in because it tastes so much better than formula. Has anyone tasted formula? Yuck!

Ds1 had taken to the sippy a lot better than ds2 has. Ds2 does better when i put his formula in the sippy cup but doesn't like much else from it. I will use a regular one with a spout when he is ready for wcm.
