Pregnant after 35

Did your significant other come to your first appointment?

HI Ladies,

I have my first check up next week with my new OBGYN. I will be at 8 weeks. My husband really wants to come but, I heard not much goes on at the first appointment and I really don't need him there to watch a gyno exam ;) However, I am getting an ultrasound so maybe he should come?

Re: Did your significant other come to your first appointment?

  • I bring mine to everyone he can make. Even if nothing goes on, he gets the same news and a chance to ask questions and feels more involved. I say let him come since he wants to do so :-)

  • Mine DH has only come to my 20 week ultrasounds with past pregnancies. He commutes via train to work downtown though, so it is not at all convenient. If our circumstances were different I would make him come to a few more.

We only have 1 car right now so my hubby has been to every appointment with me so far. He likes being a part of it and being able to ask questions and listen to answers from doc that I will likely forget in 5 minutes. haha. I think it also helps develop a good level of trust with him and the doc, he likes knowing who is dealing with the health of me and baby.
  • My husband comes to as many appts as he can.  (He has made it to 90% in my pregnancies.)

My daughter is also keen to come, too.     :)    She is coming with me to see my midwives again tomorrow.

With this pregnancy and the last DH came to the first appoint.  In both cases it was a fluke that he was able to, he had ended up with a random day off work.

This pregnancy was at a different practice than the last but the appointment was the same.  Give urine and blood samples, provide a medical history, and that's about it.  Did not see a doctor or midwife at either appointment.  So it was kind of boring for him.
  • My Hubby comes to the first one to hear heartbeat then will probably come to any others that are milestone ones!

  • I have my first appt on 6/10 and I should be about 8 weeks then as well.  I have to call and find out if they are doing a US.  If so, he is coming with me.  If not, then I'll probably just go on my own.  Good luck at your appt!

  • My DH has come to all of them.  This is his first baby and he gets excited about even the possibility of  hearing the heartbeat.

  • Definitely he comes to all U/S appointments... Any other appts, no... We both prefer I run solo on those. ;)
  • My hubby has come to all my appointments except maybe 2-3 later on in this pregnancy.

In the beginning however I really wanted him to come since last year we ended up having a Mmc and he was not with me when I found out due to knowing it was just going to be a routine simple appointment.

Was hard to go through that and have to drive home by myself. Luckily I have an awesome DR who was willing to cancel appt and bring me home. He didn't but that was awesome.

I just had an appointment two days ago and hubby didn't go with me but now I am 37 weeks and it is hard to get appointments later in the day since they are now weekly.

If you are getting an US he might want to go to see and if he has any questions he can ask.

Kind of a personal preference between the two of you.

  • Yes, but we also had a viability ultrasound at that appointment, so he was able to see the heartbeat along with me.

  • DH has gone to every one since the first at 8 weeks. We had a u/s and I did have a pelvic exam - with DH in the room. I warned him ahead of time and he sat behind me. I expected him to be a little weirded out, but he said it wasn't nearly as bad as he had thought it would be. My doc when fairly quickly with everything.

  • With our DD MH came to every appointment with the exception of maybe 2-3 towards the end, and we happened to have an ultrasound at every one. That was in Switzerland. This time, in the US, I know I am only getting about 3-4 ultrasounds and those are the appointments that he will be coming to, Not sure if every practice does it the same way, but from what I have heard, the first appt, the one at 8w is not a gyno exam. That's when you usually get an u/s to date and confirm pregnancy. I would DEF bring your hubby to that one so he can see the little peanut.
  • My husband hasn't come to anything this time. Honestly, I'm ok with it and I haven't asked him to. It's hard for him to get away from work. All of my appts are at times that would require him to be away from work for a few hours. I'd rather him save the time for vacation.

  • I think it's wonderful that he wants to go!
My husband went to everything with my first born.  This time around I am running a home based day care in a predominantly military area, so I would have to cancel with 5 sets of parents for a 45 minute absence.
My husband comes home from work to relieve me each appt.  I am so blessed as his Commanding and Warren officers are so supportive.  It is my understanding that not all of them are.
If he could, he would be there with me and I would love it.
Nothing sexier than a loving supportive mate!!
    Good luck at your appt!
  • I called to see if they will be doing a US and they aren't so I think I'm going to have DH sit it out for that one.  Call and see what your first appt will entail.

  • My boyfriend came to my first appointment because we had an ultrasound done.  It was totally awkward when it was time for the midwife to come in because I had filled out some paperwork that asked me if I had any concerns I wanted to talk to the midwife about and I wrote down, "I'm worried I have bacterial vaginosis because I'm funky down there".

Well, sure enough, the midwife walks in and says, "So you are funky down there?" and I was like, "What?!  Nooooooo.  No.  Not funky. Not at all.  "  and totally tried to downplay it.  She says, "So do you have unusual odors?" and again I say, "Pfff! PLease. No! Of course not!"  and she's like, "Discharge?" and I say "Noooooooo"  and she says, "So why do you think you have an infection then?" and boyfriends eyes get all big like he's worried his you know what is going to fall off after being in there.

Then the midwife asks me to scoot down to the end of the table with my feet in the stirrups so that she can examine me and I had been sweating and the paper on the table melted into my lady parts so I ripped the paper as I tried to scoot down and the midwife had to go in with tweezers to peel all the wet paper off my lady parts before she could examine me.   Very embarrassing.

So, yeah. Um, I wish he had not been at that appointment.

and for the record, I didn't have BV!  :)

  • I'd ask DH to come to the first one if he could, but it's a super busy time for him at work so I will be on my own. He comes to the big u/s and to any critical appointments at the end (i.e. last time discussing C-section plans).

DH has come with me to all but one appointment (he had a cold) so far. I had news of a loss at one of them, and was extremely grateful to have his support at that one.

My husband came to the u/s appointments for our 1st child - 1st appointment and 20 week.  He  only came to the 20 week u/s for our second.  We have had 2 miscarriages since so he will definitely be coming to my 1st appointment and maybe more, depending on how I'm feeling.

If he wants to come, it's worth it if you're having the u/s.  Congrats!!!
