Should I pay to fix my DCP's blinds?

I noticed when I dropped DS off this morning that he was banging on DCP's blinds, and she was like, "Oh yeah, he broke two already." They're wooden blinds and probably in the $20-$50 range. I just said, "Oh, sorry about that. Hey DS, come play with this truck over here instead of banging on the blinds."

Should I have offered to pay for them? Or is that just an incidental cost that DCPs know kids will break things?

  • I would offer.  I don't know if I feel like I should, but I would offer anyway.

Nope. It is a daycare and things happen.
this. if I had to pay for every stain on the carpet or broken toy or something, I'd be broke (*not really, I don't think or know of my kid every breaking anything.. just saying)

If my kid broke another kids toy or something, I'd offer to pay.
  • I would meet in the middle and offer to pay half.

Yes, it's a friend. They're not plantation blinds.

I kind of think if he broke them while she was watching him, I don't know if it should be my responsibility to pay.
She hasn't asked me to pay, but I didn't know if I should offer. If I was at someone's house with DS and he broke something, of course I would offer to pay, but since I'm paying her to watch him, I don't know if that changes things.

DH said he might be able to fix them.
  • If you run a daycare, you know shit is going to get wrecked. Also, as PP said, it's a write off for her. Also, it sounds like she wasn't doing anything to stop it, so, her fault.

  • I kind of feel like she is probably having a similar conversation with people like, "should I ask her to pay?" Which is why she mentioned how much they cost.  But I don't think you should because she shouldn't have let him continue to do it.  If she has budget blinds I think they will replace for free.  That's what we have because of my husband's dog.

She didn't mention the price to me. I just estimated.
  • I voted no.  Occupational hazard...business expense... it's not your responsibility, especially since you weren't there and couldn't have stepped in to prevent it... you were not in charge of your child's supervision at the time, the responsibility was on her to redirect, and even if that didn't work (as sometimes it doesn't), that is the risk of running a daycare in your home.  Part of the fees we pay to daycare providers should be allotted for such expenses.

Yes, it is NICE to offer to replace if you really want to, but not expected at all in my opinion.

  • Another vote for no since your son was under her supervision at the time of the damage.

  • I would offer to pay. I think it would be the right thing to do IMO.

  • It would depend, like PP mentioned. Is she a licensed day care and does she watch other children? Or is she just watching your child?  If she is not licensed she cant write off improvements or expenses.

Yes she should have redirected but if she is not a trained DCP it probably is not her first thought.  Not like if you were taking him to a center.

If its a friend who only watches your kid then yes. If it is an actual daycare heck no!
