TSH will NOT go down

My last pregnancy, my doctor just increased my meds by 50% and I was fine.

This pregnancy?  We have been putting the meds higher and higher and higher.  And the increases have had no effect on my TSH.

Now I am 13 weeks, we will bump them again after a bad blood test.  (I hope we bump them by A LOT).  But at this point, it doesn't even feel like it matters because the damage has already been done.

Poor baby.   :(    Those little people need adequate T4 and T3 in there.

  • I have had a history of thyroid problems and even had to put off TTC for a while while my endocrinologist medication adjusted. It is frustrating. I haven't had any difficulty with mine tis pregnancy but my doctor still monitors it a lot - I get labs done at least monthly.

How high is your TSH? Have they been checking your free T3? T4? Are you under the care of an endocrinologist?

    Good luck!

  • I have Hashimoto's and have struggled with my thyroid as well. One change that made a big difference for me was switching from the generic to the brand Synthroid for my medication. Are you on the generic or brand?

If you are on the generic, highly recommend switching to the brand. It's worth the extra money and is something the pharmacist can switch for you without needing your doctor.

This.  I also have Hashimoto's and my level spiked from 0.7 to 28.4 (!) during an IUI cycle.  After that they switched me to Synthroid and I have been consistent ever since (~6 months).

  • My insurance insists on generic.  Bastards!  But I am going to go to the pharmacy and ask for the name brand.  I am happy to pay full price.  Although at this point, it is practically a fruitless exercise.  It sucks that I can't turn back the clock.  I had really hoped that the baby would have had enough T3 and T4 for at least a FEW weeks of the first trimester.  But apparently not.  The last increase 4 weeks ago was not nearly enough.

Oh well.  Nothing I can do now.  I just hope my doctor or midwife can tell me some outcomes they have seen from other women who have had higher TSH numbers.  And hopefully a good percentage of those outcomes aren't horrendous.

Thanks for your concern everyone.  It means a lot.  xo
