Serious Constipation

OMG! I have had major constipation for the last couple weeks and it's insane. I have heard about colace as well as some other OTC does anyone else have this problem and does anyone take something daily for this? How many a day? I'm not really a fan of drinking stuff or having to taste meds :( TIA

Re: Serious Constipation

  • I was taking Colace almost every day from before my egg retrieval until shortly after my BFP. I guess it helped. I'm not having any issues anymore so I stopped taking it awhile ago. When I was taking it, I mixed it up depending on how I was feeling - some days I took one, some days I took three.

Another thing that helped me after all of my surgeries was eating prunes/dried plums.

I'm pretty sure I took colase pills after DD was born. Is this an option during pregnancy or only after? Did the job well though!
  • Definitely get some kind of assistance for that ASAP! Colace is good and I've never tried metamucel but I've heard it also works. If you have any concerns about what is safe to take during pregnancy don't hesitate to call your doctor. Speaking from experience though, left alone the situation will only get worse and more painful and frustrating. If it gets too bad you end up in a very awkward doctor appointment where they might have to 'manually assist.' I found adding an apple, pear and a kiwi to my diet daily really helps!

  • Colace is safe. Also make sure that you're drinking enough water. A lack of water will back you up.

I'm thinking (hoping) these awful cramps I've even having off and on are due to bad constipation. Today I went out and stocked up on FiberOne cereal and bars, and some Smooth Move tea. Also drinking lots of water and hot water with lemon. Praying this subsides soon, for all of us!
  • It's awful for me at work. I have to walk outside on my breaks to get things moving better.

  • That was too funny, i only hope I never have constipation that bad.

Yeah, you do not want to end up like this D14 mom
holy shit.  literally.  i so wish that one had been QFP'd.

@XomgitsshanX, i have IBS and i'm no stranger to constipation (although i've never had it quite as bad as that D14 thread, YIKES), and my miracle combo is miralax (which makes your poo slippy, i guess) and psyllium capsules (yay fiber).  it takes a couple days to work (as with anything), but i like these over colace because you can adjust your doses according to what works best for you.  it took me a week or so to figure it out initially, and right now i'm re-figuring because the hormones are messing with my guts afresh now.  if you do try psyllium, make sure you take each capsule separately with lots of water, and depending on how nauseous you've been, you might want to consider taking them with a snack.

edit: also with the psyllium, you'll want to start with a low dose (like 2 capsules twice a day) and ramp up slowly every few days.

I struggled with this a couple weeks ago. All I did was increase my water intake and I eat a kiwi fruit once a day. That has helped a lot. (Kiwi supposedly has a natural laxative property).

This just in: Smooth Move tea definitely works. Trust me. =D>
  • I also had constipation bad. I did miralax for a few days and it didn't seem to work. I then read drinking hot water with one lemon wedge squeezed in it helps. I was so amazed it worked really well. Took a day or two but I am back to regular now and don't need anything anymore.
  • I find Plum juice to be helpful. More palatable than Prum.

  • Are you taking zofran, by any chance? A nasty side effect of that one is constipation, so you'll definitely need something to help you out. I ended up switching meds to Diclegis, which doesn't have constipation as a side effect. Hallelujah! Other than that, my doctor recomended increases my water and fiber intake, along with colace. Although she did say not to take the colace until you feel "straightened out". The colace package says you can take up to 6 a day, but I'm only taking two (50 mg each).

  • I took colace during ivf. I thought it wasnt working so I just kept taking it. It gave me the shits. I pooped my pants. It was awful. If you do take something, don't take more than the recommended amount....trust me. HAHAHA

Also, I've found that when I work out it really helps to get things moving. It's been my motivation for the last month to get out and run because I know I'll be less miserable in that department.
