May 2014 Moms

Birth Story- hcorcoran

Thursday, May 15th was Cody's 30th birthday. We didn't make plans in advance since it was so close to my May 18th due date. The night before, we bought last minute tickets to American Idiot and on his birthday, we planned a last minute dinner at the local teppan restaurant with my mom, Cody's mom and one of our nephews.

Earlier in the day, we decided to go to lunch at the new pizza place in town. Right before we left, I went to the bathroom and noticed I was spotting and losing pieces of my mucous plug. I was excited because I had no progress toward labor earlier in the week. I had a doctor's appointment after lunch. We had a few minutes in between lunch and the appointment, so we ran to Target to grab some items for the hospital. Thank goodness we did!

At the doctor, we had good news! I was almost 100% effaced and dilated to 1 cm! My OB was going out of town, so he had me schedule my appointment with another doctor for Monday and he said he expected to see me next Thursday when he returned. I told him hopefully I would have the baby by then. Before we left, our nurse let us know who was on call for the weekend. We were excited that it was not the doctor who we disliked from our first OB appointment. We went home and got ready for dinner.

At dinner, I started to feel menstruel like cramps. I didn't think a whole lot about it because I had felt that way off and on since the heat wave came in. We went home from dinner and rented The Wolf of Wall Street to watch. I continued not to feel well and kept having to go to the bathroom. More mucous and blood was there each time and I started getting back pain. I took a bath and decided to go to bed without finishing the movie.

Around midnight, I woke up feeling contractions. I started timing them on my phone and noticed they were coming ten minutes apart. I dozed off and on until 2 and woke up Cody to tell him I thought I was in labor. We decided to try to sleep some more. By 4 am, they were 6 minutes apart and lasting for a minute or more. I decided to take a shower, do my hair, and eat something. We walked the dogs and finally left for the hospital around 5:30.

We entered through the ER and were taken up to labor and delivery. The nurse hooked me up to the NST and did a cervical check. I was at 2.5. She said the doctor likes to see more progress in order to admit me, so she recommended I walk the halls to move things along. After an hour, she checked me again and I had progressed to 3.5 and they decided to admit me!

We decided to let some of our friends and family know we were at the hospital. Cody took care of keeping in touch with them. They let me know I could get the epidural once I was at 4 and had received 2 bags of fluid. At this point, my back labor was getting worse and I was a mess. They let me walk some more, which removed the pressure from my back.

The anesthesiologist arrived and got me hooked up to the epidural. I started feeling relief, but they started me on pitocin as well. The contractions started coming hard and fast and the back labor wasn't getting better. The medication had pooled all on my right side and I could feel every thing on my left. I started bawling because I really didn't think I could do it at that point. Cody got the nurses and they upped the medication and had me roll to my left. The medication finally spread to my left.

The OB to call came in to check me and I was at 7! She was about to break my water when it broke on its own. I finally got some relief and was able to nap a bit. My mom came by around 4 and my brother around 5. At 7, I was at 10 and ready to push. My mom and brother left to tell my grandparents so they could come out to meet their first great grandchild.

Pushing was a surreal experience. Everything was progressing well until we got close to crowning. The baby's head would move to crowning and then go back in. Finally, after 3 hours, some big pushes and a quick episiodemy, he was out. They put Myles on my chest and he was purple. The cord was wrapped around his neck. Cody cut the cord and they took him to the infant station. Finally, we heard him cry and they brought him back over. After our hour of bonding time, our families wee able to come in and meet him. I couldn't believe my grandparents had stayed until past 11 PM!

On 5/16/14 at 10:09 PM, Myles Robert entered the world at 8 pounds, 4 ounces and 21 inches long. He looks just like his dad!
