Help me decode my LO

She is EBF. She nurses to the point of calming down and dozing off, and will even unlatch, and them once I think she is completely asleep she starts twitching and moving her arms and wakes back up and gets fussy again. It started at 4 am and she has been like this most of the day. She took one good nap this morning but then just two teeny catnaps this afternoon. Is it possible it is tummy troubles? She has it had any issues before now. She is just over 5 wks.

Oh and she has had a lot of happy and calm moments today - I realized it sounded like she was fussy all day. It is just this BFing, falling asleep and waking back
Up cycle that is when she gets fussy.

Re: Help me decode my LO

  • Sounds like gas
My LO does the same.. My suggestion is to swaddle the arms, he falls asleep and his arm and hand movement wakes him up. We swaddle and he's good to go.

  • My LO is doing the same thing, 5 weeks today.... Looking for insight as well! She has always been a "rester" when nursing, but she is falling into this same pattern.
  • @mrscrcalli‌ - she hates being swaddled. It makes her extremely angry!

Have you tried seeing what part she hates? Like LO hated it but later we realized he actually just hates his legs swaddled, so with the sleep sacks he's super content

This is totally my kid and she hates being swaddled! I tried some gas drops and swaying while bouncing her and she finally calmed down. It's so hard not to know what she needs!

  • Sounds like a growth spurt and gas.
  • I got her swaddled. She screamed her head off for about 5 minutes, I gave her to DH and it sounds like she has calmed down. No has drops in the house but I tried bicycling the legs and nothing happened. I know she is way over tired right now which is contributingn to the crankiness.

  • Overtired babies are extremely cranky. Many people think that I am nuts when I insist that DS gets at least a catnap in every 2hrs. Somedays I can and others I cannot & the days that i can't I know that I'll be in for an hell of an evening.
  • My LO does this as well. Oftentimes I think it's because she's not actually done eating. Can you switch sides before your LO falls asleep?

  • This was us today! I kept thinking she was hungry- which she was as she took 5 oz for the first time, but I think gas was the issue too. I may try more burping tomorrow, everyday is a new day around here!

Maybe it's hunger and she isn't getting full. You could tickle her to keep her awake so she finishes before dozing off.

Ours does this too. I think he falls asleep nursing, then is just startled when he wakes up and isnt where he thought he was (ie: not on the boob anymore). And possibly that he realizes that he's still hungry.

  • So after DH got her calmed down she slept for 6 glorious hours. I had to wake her only because I thought my boobs would explode if I let her go any longer.

I tried desperately to get her to fall asleep yesterday afternoon but since she has gone through her first leap she is so much harder to get down during the day. I am still trying to figure out what works.
