We leave a key under the mat. Although when they first started coming my mom was at home with the kids when they came. It's much easier to Not be there, we just get in their way.
Housecleaners have a key and we are generally not home. During maternity leave, I'd sometimes be home when they got there, but usually left to visit a friend so I wasn't in their way. My LO and I were sick one day, so they cleaned the nursery in like 5 minutes, then we stayed in that room while they did the rest of the house. I was going to have her skip that room, but she wouldn't hear of it. It was sweet.
Ours has a key, sometimes we are there getting ready to leave when she arrives, but it's like a 5 minute overlap. She's been with me since 2005 or 2004 though, so if it was all going to go to hell in a handbasket I figure it would've happened by now.
They have a key and I'm not usually there. I was there when they came during maternity leave and I just moved with the baby from the family room to the nursery to keep out of her way, but I actually found it kind of awkward to have them working on my house while I was just sitting there with the baby. I felt like I should be doing the dishes or something.
We have a keyless lock. It uses a code. We can look to see how long they are there, open it remotely if necessary, and can change it easily (which was important when we fired our last cleaners)
Ours has the garage code but no key. If we switch cleaners we'll change the code.
Normally I am not home when they come but the last few times I have been because I am home with a newborn. I definitely prefer NOT to be here. I just feel like I am in the way and it is awkward for them to be cleaning around me.
