Did you wear rings to the hospital?

I am almost at my due date and have had no swelling. My rings still fit. Should I take them off before going to the hospital? Can labor or the meds give you swelling? What if I end up having a C-section?

Re: Did you wear rings to the hospital?

  • I left mine at home even though they fit. Even at home I'm just wearing band. Feel like my engagement ring will scratch LO as we clumsily learn to BF

  • Mine fit through the whole pregnancy and I wore mine when I delivered DD.

  • I had mine on the entire time, including for my unplanned c/s.

To answer your question though, yes the fluids can make you swell. In my experience though (2 kids) it was mostly in my feet.

  • I wore them to the hospital. They asked me to take them off. I had a vaginal birth.
  • I took mine off. More because I didn't want to loose them if I had to at the hospital.

With DD I wore them. The fluids did make me swell though, but it was never an issue for my hands as much as my feet like pp said. I also had a vaginal birth with her and was never asked to take my rings off.

I just had my rings cleaned and my jewelry store recommended leaving them at home because of hospital theft. I think it will depend on if I remember to take them off or not when the time comes.
  • I took mine off and I am glad. They pumped me full of so much fluid that my swelling got even worse!
  • I had a scheduled c section. They told me no jewelry.

  • I got super swollen from the fluids during my induction. I wore my wedding band on a necklace.

  • I wore mine to the hospital. Ended up taking them off though because I did swell a bit. Would have left them at home if I had thought of it.

  • Stored my rings the month before because my hospital makes you remove all jewelry, regardless of birthing method.

The hospital told me no jewlry but no one checked. I didn't wear them in case I had to take them off. I'm glad I left them! They pumped me full of so much fluids for induction I couldn't wear my rings for a week. We won't even discuss my poor feet.
  • I had my rings on all through my pregnancy and kept them on at the hospital. Probably would of drove me nuts not having them on- would of felt naked.

With my first pregnancy, I had swelling, so I wore my rings on a necklace for the last month. Because of that, I did wear them in the hospital, they were just on my necklace as opposed to my fingers. I had to have a c-section, and I was told to remove them before hand. This time, I'm not wearing my rings. My fingers have swelled just enough to make them uncomfortable, and for some reason I keep breaking the necklaces, so I just gave up after necklace number 4. lol.
  • I'd leave them at home.

  • Mine quit fitting on first tri. Had they fit and I was planning a vaginal delivery I probably would have worn them but I was so bloated with DS1 (c/s) that I actually didn't get stretch marks until after they pumped me full of fluids.

Congrats to my GP Sister from another mister Bruinsbabe!!

  • I wore my plain wedding band for vaginal birth -- but to be fair we had a very fast delivery and there wasn't time for staff to worry about jewelry. I don't wear my engagement ring every day and I wouldn't have wanted to worry about it at the hospital.

    I didn't only because they didn't fit.  They still don't :/

  • I swelled so badly that I'm glad I didn't wear my ring to the hospital.

  • I wore my rings and regretted it. My hands hadn't swelled the whole pregnancy but they did after my c-section because of all the fluids. I didn't want to take them off and risk losing them so I was stuck with them on my finger feeling too tight.

  • I wore mine out of laziness more than some dedication to wearing them. Uncomplicated vaginal birth- no one cared if I had jewelry on.

I took my wedding band off at the hospital and had DH hold it. I was afraid of losing it or it getting stuck. Turns out most of the swelling was in my feet.

Mine have been in the safety deposit box for months. But I did remove my necklace and earrings before going to the hospital. The info said no jewelry.

  • I wore mine on a necklace they stopped fitting around 38 weeks. I had major swelling after all the meds from my induction, 2 weeks pp I still can't wear mine and my legs are still sausages. I would take them off in case.
  • Thanks for all the info! I think I will leave them at home after reading this.
  • They made me remove all jewelry

    It's a BOY

  • I just want to say how lucky you guys are that your rings still fit!
Our hospital told us to take your jewelry off and leave it all at home. If you where it in they tell you to take it off and put it away.

My rings fit throughout both pregnancies and recoveries, but I never take jewelry to the hospital. I leave rings, earrings, necklaces, and other valuable at home regardless of attachment or sentimental value.

  • I wore them but had to take them off during labor because they were irritating me. In all fairness everything was irritating me and if I had a chose I probably would have been nude during the whole progress. It was do flippin hot in that hospital room.

  • I had a scheduled c section. They told me no jewelry.

This. I put them on a necklace and had DH wear it. Later that day I put them on.

  • I had to wear mine I couldn't get it off but the nurses were pretty mad about it and didn't have a problem reprimanding me! I'll kno next time
  • I didn't wear mine and I'm glad. I blew up after labor from head to toe. I couldn't imagine having my rings on. My fingers became sausages.
