Dipes and wipes- how many??

FTM just trying to get an idea of how many diapers we will go through on a daily basis. What size did you start off with and how long did they stay at that number? Also, we have a few containers of wipes stocked up- how long do they last (~70ct.)? I know it depends on the size of the babe and the size of the poops but just trying to get an estimate!

Re: Dipes and wipes- how many??

  • We went through about 12 diapers a day the first couple of weeks. Now it's about 8-10. We started with preemie since max was so little and are using newborns now, but I am in the process of switching to cloth. As for wipes I think it more depends on the user. I tend to get away with one per change unless it's really messy.

  • Generally, a newborn gets changed every two hours, so 12 diapers a day.  As they start sleeping longer at night, that number goes down.  Here's a decent link with the numbers: https://www.kidsgrowth.com/resources/articledetail.cfm?id=431

I will say that these days, C being 2 years old, we go through six a day.  One in the morning, four changes at daycare, and a fresh one right before bed.

Wipes: I only use one on pee diapers, poop it depends on the consistency.  Newborn poop, a couple unless it's a blow out, and generally then I'd just spray her down in the shower.

  • We are currently using 8-10 diapers per baby per day. Wipes...1 per wet diaper, normally 3-4 per dirty diaper (those don't happen often so are pretty messy).
Prior to delivery we only had two huge boxes of size 1 diapers (given as gifts), hadn't stocked up on the smaller ones yet. Currently one baby is in preemie and the other in newborns, both with some time to go before they outgrow them, so not much help on what sizes to get.

  • Plan on about a bajillion wipes a day.

I swear some of those first baby poops took DH and I 10 wipes to get her clean. We got better eventually, but that infant poop can get everywhere and we were novices.

  • Also, we use more wipes now with a 2 year old than we did when she was little, mainly because a packet lives on the counter for cleaning up after meal time (she's a messy eater), clean up sore runny noses when tissues are too rough, etc.  They are wonderful.

My friends told me to start off with water and not wipes. Mostly because the baby skin is so sensitive and we are not likely going out the first couple weeks. As for diapers, I got two small boxes as a gift and plan to get more later (thanks Amazon mom for fast delivery!)
  • It's been awhile but I think 10-12 diapers a day for the first couple weeks. 8-10 until about 4-5mths and then 6-8 after that up to a year.
I started with newborn sizes and then you go off their weight. Once baby was sleeping through the night I would use a size larger in the diapers to help absorb more and not wake them.

Wipes- never to many wipes!! I used several with every change to make sure baby was clean and smelled good.
  • Geezus. Disposable diapering twins will be maddeningly expensive.
  • We go through about 10 diapers a day. He's currently wearing NB, but could definitely wear preemie if I felt like going out and buying them. Our girls never went past a size 3 diaper (both potty- trained at 2.5).

  • If you're buying disposables, do some research as to where you can save the most money.  We like Target brand, which is cheaper to begin with.  Add a Target Red Card (debit attached to your existing checking or credit card) which saves us 5% and gets free shipping and they are even cheaper.  We also use the Cartwheel app (must be in store) which often has 10% off all Target brand products, and the occasional "buy two boxes and get a free $20 gift card" specials and we've ended up doing pretty well.

  • Newborns here. He's going through 10-13 a day... Side note, I ordered in bulk off of amazon and it saved us a boat load of money!

Never enough wipes. I find that the Huggies last longer than target brand and pampers, usually one wipe per diaper with those so I spend the extra money as I use less. Bjs brand is also cheaper and good.

Diapers are a hard call to stock up on based on sizing. I have a stash of sizes 2, 3, and 4. I bought two small boxes of size 1. Some kids never need preemie or newborn so if my kid needs that I will go out and get it as needed. I agree with about 12 diapers a day for the first few months. Now ds is 14 months and goes through about 5 a day and is in size 4.

My babies never fit into newborn diapers- just something to think about! We went straight to size 1 even in the hospital. I prefer Huggies diapers (they just always worked out best with my chunky babies) and Huggies natural wipes (they are so nice and thick).
