Newborn Qs: head bobbing and sleepiness

Ds was just born yesterday! So far he's gotten an awesome latch and ate well a handful of times. Yay! But most of the time he has been super sleepy. Even when he seems like he may be hungry he tends to bob his head around a lot and get frustrated even if he's been right on target.

Any ideas about what's normal for a nb as far as how often they should eat (the nurses either are impressed he's latched at all or are startled that he's not eating every 2/3 hours) and / or about what to make of the head bobbing?

TIA

Re: Newborn Qs: head bobbing and sleepiness

  • A lot of people have to wake newborns to feed them.  Personally, I woke my kids every three hours until they regained their birth weight.  Every time I fed them, I would undress them down to their diaper and change their diaper when I switched sides.  You can tickle their feet and rub their heads too.
