Litter Box

So, I had my appointment with the nurse practitioner this morning and she said I have to stop cleaning the litter box. I was using gloves and all, but she said to just stop. So my husband is whining, but he'll start up- I sure am looking forward to hearing the complaining for 9 months :/. Anyway, in order to make it easier I wnat to get a better box. Does anyone who has cats use one of those automatic cleaner litter boxes? If so, do they work well and make it easier?? Or- if you have cats, did you keep cleaning even though they said you shouldn't?

Re: Litter Box

  • I had one and it was so worth the money but stopped working after 2-3 years.  I am certainly thinking about getting another automatic litter box as hubby isn't fond of taking care of the kitty litter (although he has been a dear about it and hasn't complained.)

I think mine was a littermate.  We got it from Petsmart but I have seen the same brand on Amazon.

  • My husband cleans the litter boxes pregnant or not. It's just one of his chores. We just have a plain old box with litter in it. Not a fan of those self cleaning ones.

You are so lucky. Mine has only just now been shamed into it because of the doctor. He is so stubborn. He's been great at everything else, he just doesn't like my cats at all. Oh well for him! His baby too!

  • I'm usually the one that has to do it, so DH has taken over. He was away for 3 nights and I had to clean it wearing disposable gloves and then thoroughly washed my hands.

We don't have an automatic scooper.

We have a Cat Genie.  It was initially expensive, but we haven't bought granules for it in about 6 months at this point.  We have 1 for our 2 cats.  Living in a rural area, they are mainly mousers for us (and our neighbors LOVE it because our cats help protect their gardens, too), so toxo however it's spelled is a SERIOUS concern for me being pregnant.

It is hooked up in our basement.  You need a water intake and a waste line, so ours gets water from where our washer is and drains into the gray water side of the system.  The Cat Genie scoops itself, rinses the granules, and then flushes the waste into the sewer line.  No scooping, no mess, no cat litter dust, and rarely any smell ever.  No one ever smells litter box in our house.

We got it from Amazon and you can subscribe and save for the washes for the granules and the granules themselves.

We have had it since April of 2010 and it still works just as well as the day we got it.

  • We have a regular kitty litter box. It's DH's only chore (we usually do everything else together; this is the only chore that is designated as his only). He's a champ about it and doesn't complain.

Our cat is an indoor cat and I've had cats since before I could walk. Toxo isnt/wasn't a big concern for me (I've already been exposed to it, and I don't deal directly with the poop).

Doctor also Reminded me to wear Gloves while gardening.Even if you don't have a cat, or your cat is indoors only. A stray or tomcat may have availed themselves of your awesomely large little box.

  • One thing the nurse told me, is that gloves are important, but the most important part is wearing a mask. Who knew

We have a regular old box and DH has been cleaning since my BFP. He complains sometimes, but he can suck it up and just do it. Lol there are tons of chores I don't like, but still do because they need done. It's called being an adult.

  • My DH took over and he doesn't complain much about it. He actually gets mad at me if I try to put on gloves and do it. About the automatic litter boxes: some cats are afraid of them and will go anywhere but in that box (just a personal experience).

  • If you're going to try the automatic, you might offer them both the automatic and the regular at first until they get used to it.

  • I was worried about the litter box thing so I trained my cats to go outside. So much easier and nicer on the wallet!
    BabyFruit Ticker
  • When we switched over, we did it during the middle of the week (I would completely clean the littler box out on Sundays) so I just put some of the old litter in the box to help him recognize his scent.  Our box had motion detectors and would only go off 1 minute after the cat  left.  Never bothered him a bit.

  • We have the Scoop-Free self-cleaning box. We love it. It's lasted four or five years at this point. We used to take turns doing the monthly cartridge change, but now DH is doing it again. I mean, it's the least they can do.
