Any other VBAC hopefuls here?

There are a few of us here, right?  I thought it might be nice for us to touch base as we get closer to delivery and support each other/answer questions/etc.  Especially since the VBAC board is basically dead these days.

  • I'm hopeful, but I already have my RCS scheduled. I doubt I'll get to VBAC, but anything will be better than my last experience.

  • Great idea!!  I'm really hoping for VBAC.  I'm really nervous though and have a lot of questions for my doctor.  It would be really great for us to have support!  @iris427 you've had a successful VBAC already haven't you?

Pretty much everyone I know who had a scheduled RCS says it was way better than their first delivery and a good experience.  So I hope that will be true for you too if you have one. :)

I actually made a c/s birth plan last time in case I needed another c/s.  I'm going to talk to my doctor about it again this time too.

That's awesome!  I'm curious, what did you have in your c/s birth plan?  The only thing I can think of is I'd like DH to cut the cord since he didn't get to last time.

This was the plan I wrote up.  Some of it is specific to my situation.  Some of it is stuff that my hospital does already and some they probably wouldn't agree to, but it can't hurt to ask, right?  Also the language sounds kind of demanding, so I'd soften that up a bit before I presented it to any doctors--it was mainly for myself to know what to ask about.

    -Leave my arms unstrapped
-Allow husband to stay with me during c-section prep
-Insert catheter after I am numb
    -Anti-nausea meds right away
-Would like both husband and doula in the room for c-section (I had a doula last time, but I'm not using one this time)
-Use hypoallergenic solutions on my skin; I had an allergic reaction after my first c-section
-Would like still photos allowed of baby
-Would like to wear glasses/contacts during surgery or put glasses on to see baby being born
-Please bring baby to me right away to see/hold
-Husband to announce the sex of the baby (we were Team Green last time, but we already know what we're having this time)
-Please leave cord long for husband to cut
    -Dermabond for skin closure
-Baby to stay with us at all times in the OR and recovery unless there is a medical problem
-I would like to hold baby on the way to the recovery room
-I would like to breastfeed within the first hour after birth
-Please help me make this birth a special and positive experience

Was hoping for one but I'm having twins and A is breech and B is transverse. dr is open to vbac if they change position but at 34 weeks it's unlikely. I had a vaginal birth with my first and an emergency c with #2 and I hope a scheduled cs is a better experience!
  • I'm hoping for one. I just scheduled the "back up" RCS today since they won't induce and this kid has to be out by 41 weeks per my OB. Hopefully I don't need it, though.
  • I am a vbac hopeful. My doctor seems pretty supportive but I am worried she will switch up on me last second like my last doctor. If I don't get a vbac I at least hope my experience is better.

I am trying for a vbac! I'm anxious and really hope I can pull this off. I'm not scheduling a c section as my practice will induce a vbac! Good luck ladies!

  • I'm attempting a VBAC and switched practices early on because none of the doctors would talk about the possibility of a VBAC. Come to find out, my current practice is the only one in town that will do a VBAC. I'm very hopeful, but know there's a chance of a RCS. Good luck to everybody attempting!

  • I'm working towards one.  I'm feeling good that DD was a mal-presentation and I did get to push with her so I know my body knows how to labor she was just a twisted up mess of a 9lb baby.  I have a friend who has had 4! vbacs with my MW practice so I have no worries about their support of vbacs..

I'm not sure if I'm supposed to schedule a c/s--I should probably ask about that.  Hospital policy says I can't go past 41 weeks.  My doctor said induction might be an option for me if necessary, since I've already had a vaginal delivery.

I'm supposed to do a VBAC consult appointment soon too.  My doctor is a family practice physician, so she has an OB practice that backs her up (like a midwife might have), and they have all of her VBAC patients come in for an appointment with an obstetrician.  I'm a little nervous about that, but hopefully it will go well and they'll be supportive.

Me me me!! I'm really excited! So far this pregnancy has gone super smooth and I haven't had the issues I had last time. (PIH which later turned into pre-e which lead to an induction at 38 weeks) I'm hoping everything stays good so I'm able to go as far as possible to give baby time to come on her own.

Once I hit 41 weeks we will do an NST and go from there. I'm personally not very comfortable going too far over 41 weeks. So depending on how things look if I get to 41 and everything is good we will probably give it a few days, if I'm favorable we might talk about induction. As of now baby is head down so I'm hoping she stays that way!
  • I'm trying for a VBAC! So far my doctor is very optimistic. DS was a c section because he was transverse but so far this LO has stayed head down. Good luck to everyone trying for a VBAC!

  • Im hoping for a VBAC too. I had my c section last time due to breech presentation five years ago. Perinatologist said im a perfect candidate, and my OB is on board but I can tell she is leaving everything up to me and hasnt been very involved in the decision. Which worries me, I am going to make my c/s very clear as in boundaries. Oh and they wont let me go past my due date. Or I get a c/s.
  • I know my doctor and one other one in the practice are pro-VBAC.  I'm not sure about the others (I think there are 7 total?)  That's one of the questions I have for my doctor since it's not guaranteed that she'll be on call when I go into labor.  I want to know how my VBAC will be handled by other doctors.

My doctor gave me the option. I opted for a csection. It's scheduled and we're ready to go in 8 weeks. However, if I happen to go into labor early...idk if he'd book it into OR, or try a VBAC. Honestly didn't think to ask. I should probably ask him how we'd handle that situation, so I could be prepared.

It might depend on how far progressed you are.  If you come in at 8 cm, they may more open to a VBAC (assuming you are OK with it) than if you come in at 3 cm.  Definitely a good question to ask.    I'm sure if you go into labor and still want a RCS, they'll do one.

I've met all five doctors in my ob office and they're all supportive of vbac and natural deliveries. I feel so lucky compared to my previous experiences. They're all on board to let me go to 42 weeks. We're laboring at home until transition with a doula. I did just get a second due date of 6/19 because the baby and my belly are measuring a few weeks ahead, so I could deliver anytime between now and 7/26. Crazy!

My doc with my first DD told me that her head was so big, she never would have dropped. So I think I just have that stuck in my head, which is why I went for an RCS. My body never progressed towards a natural delivery with her. If I progressed this time, I imagine I'd be ok trying.

  • I'm planning a VBAC. My providers are great and do them all the time. I can go to 42 weeks and they'll induce if I'm favorable. My c-section was because my daughter was breech and this one is head down which is great. But my section happened when it did because of severe pre-e/HELLP so I'm worried about developing those complications before I'm favorable for the induction. Trying to stay positive and plan for the best! We'll be laboring at home with our doula for as long as possible too.

I don't think so.  I'm an hour and half from my hospital.  If need be, my SIL lives in the city where my hospital is.  As long as you talk to your doctor and let them know you should be able to create a plan.

@ehpope I'm over an hour away from my hospital too.  A lot of moms have to drive a bit to have a VBAC, since smaller community hospitals usually don't do them, so it's actually pretty common.

My plan is to stay with my mom, who lives right near the hospital, once I get to 37 weeks, since I had a fairly fast labor with my second.  If you don't have an option like that, I've heard of people leaving as soon as they think labor is starting, and then getting a cheap motel room near the hospital to labor in until they're ready to go in.  I would definitely ask your doctor about it.

@isis427, can I tell you how glad I am that you are on our BMB?

I'm surprisingly indifferent as to how this baby comes out, which I find fascinating as I had definite goals last time around.  I transferred my care to a birth center (the facility with the lowest c-section rate in Massachusetts) half-way through my last pregnancy in an effort to avoid that primary c-section. Long story short - I never went into labor and had an emergency c-section when a NST 9 days post-date showed DS1 decelerating every time I had a Braxton Hicks.

It took me a while to mentally get over my c-section. But I assumed when I got pregnant again that I would have similar issues as the first time around (tiny placenta and GD), so I expected to need a RCS. Fast forward 2 trimesters, and this pregnancy is nothing like the last.  So if things work out, I'm going to do a trial of labor.  However, DS2 is breach, and if he doesn't turn I'll have another c-section.  And I'm totally okay with that.

I wonder how much of this is just me protecting myself by not getting my hopes up, and how much is being comfortable with what is familiar.  I know what to expect from and how to recover from a c-section.  Labor is a total unknown.

  • I am attempting a VBAC as well.  The town I live in is pretty anti-VBAC so I had to scramble and pray for a Dr to accept me.  She is a bitch, but I love the plan she has for me and I am thankful for the opportunity to at least try no matter what the outcome.  I am very optimistic but also know that things don't always pan out like you expect.  I have hired a doula this time around so maybe she will be able to see signs and help me manage labor differently.  Who knows? Ex is supportive of my decisions so that helps and he has voiced that he would like to "help deliver and cut the cord". Fingers crossed to all of us :)

  • How many of you are having doulas?  I would be interesting in having one this time.  Does insurance cover their services?  And do you think it's too late to get one?  DH is hesitant to have one because he thinks that's what he's supposed to be there for.  I think I was totally unprepared for labor last time.  I had seen 3 births so I thought I had things figured out.  To me it was, go into labor, go to hospital, get hooked up to pitocin, lay in bed for 8 hours, have baby.  I think having a coach to help me with positions and just the mental aspect of it would help me tremendously.  I really tend to psych myself out of a lot of things so someone to help me focus would be great.

Insurance does not cover a doula (that I know of).  The going rate in my area is $500 for their services.  Mine has been pretty hands off during my pregnancy but I fully expect her to be more hands on and proactive with things in the coming weeks. She has a 80% VBAC success rate and is a VBAC patient herself (with twins).  Those who use them say they make a HUGE difference.  We shall see!

I think it's great that you feel OK with either option.  I had a really hard time accepting the possibility of another c/s with my second.  This time I'm hoping for another VBAC, but I think I'll be OK with another c/s if it needs to happen.  And I feel much more relaxed about the whole thing because of that.  In the end, we'll have cute little bundles in our arms either way.

    @kbelle24

I'm not having a doula this time because we are moving in August, and I couldn't justify the expense of a doula at this time.  But I had doulas at my first two births.   My husband really liked having them because they made things easier for him too.  The doula helped show him ways to help me.  If he needed a break, he knew the doula was there to take care of me, etc.  A doula will never replace your husband, and a good doula wouldn't try.

Call around--you don't know if it's too late to find one unless you ask.  I bet you can still find someone, especially if you are open to using newer doulas who are just getting started, or doulas still doing their training/certification.

Insurance doesn't cover a doula.  But you can usually find ones who will do sliding scale or accept payment arrangements.  Sometimes if you find a doula who is doing her certification, she'll do it for free (since she needs a certain number of births to get certified).

    I'm a hopeful July VBAC-er as well!

I had a c/s with my first due to fetal distress when I started trying to push her out (cord was around her neck 3 times) so I am a good candidate for a VBAC this time given that I did go into labour on my own (albeit at 41w) and progressed all the way to pushing with no real problems.  My OB is supportive of a VBAC (I have to check on the others in the group since there's no guarantee she'll be the one there if/when I go into labour) but as a backup plan we have a RCS on the books for 40w6d (July 18th) since they will not let me go past 41w.

My u/s on Monday (at 33w2d) revealed that my placenta has moved up from it's low lying position and the BPP & growth results were great.  The only issue may be baby boy's positioning, he is head down in somewhat of a transverse "C" position with his head low on my right with one arm up by his face (which explains the tickling/punching of my cervix), his back goes up my right side and across the top of my belly (second arm is by his side so I get little fist bumps into my ribs on the right side), butt is by my ribs on the left top and his feet are down by his face on the low left side).  There is a chance that when the time comes he could go either feet or head first because of the way he is lying so I'll have to see what my OB thinks of his positioning for a VBAC attempt at my apppointment next week, or she'll schedule another u/s for closer to delivery to check his position again since he is a big mover still.

Good luck to everyone for VBACs!!

I also hired a Doula. I labored last time and pushed for hours with an op baby. I am not the best vbac candidate for this reason. I'm hoping the Doula can help make the difference when I need it in the end.

@jing22 That's what happened during my c/s too.  I actually wonder if the fact that you had an OP baby makes you a better candidate--the baby's position was probably a factor in why your labor dystocia happened, and it's not likely to happen again (similar to the reason that moms who had breech babies are considered good VBAC candidates--because the baby's position is what caused the issue).

I'm hoping that is the case. I've switched practices 3 x over to find drs who are really supportive of me. This is a very emotional thing for me because I was so down after my last birth from the labor and recovery. I feel like I have to do this so I'm in a better place mentally post labor. So please post your labor stories: everyone else's strength will carry us end of the monthers through.

  • Hoping to Vbac. So far I haven't hired a doula. I honestly didn't find her that useful other than taking pictures. I ended up with the v section anyway. Mine was due to fetal intolerance/ position. So they say I am a good candidate. My midwife practice has a 90% success rate. But I ended up with the c section with them too. Trying not to get my hopes up too high.

I am very much hoping for a VBAC. 17 years ago i had an unmedicated vaginal delivery with DS. Went into labor naturally and he was 8lbs. Needed a c-section at 34 weeks with DD due to vasa previa.

This little guy has been breech for 14 weeks and just flipped on Monday, so I'm feeling much more hopeful. My Dr is 100% behind me. However, I also have GD and baby is big. We'll see! Good luck to all you hopefuls!!! Recovery is soooo much easier.
