January 2013 Moms

WWYD

We have planned to visit my mom this weekend. Yesterday she sent me a text saying there has been a measles outbreak in her area and not to come (I looked it up online and it seems that there was one case in my mom's area). DD was vaccinated for measles on April 1st, and I know I was vaccinated 6 or so years ago. I think DH has been too (not 100 percent sure). It looks like the baby who was infected by the measles was in the area where my BIL was working, but I don't know if he was working that day. I don't think that either of my sisters or my BIL are up to date with their vaccines. We most likely would mostly stay at my mom's house, but we may go to the park, and church.
I just don't know if we should go or not. I know the likelihood of any of us getting sick is slim. But my mom doesn't think it is worth the risk especially since I am 11 weeks pregnant.

Re: WWYD

  • I would probably go.  There are outbreaks of vaccine-preventable diseases everywhere now because of you-know-who.  I don't think we can all quit living because of it.  It doesn't seem like you would be exposed at your MIL's house, you can avoid the park if it is busy, and maybe you can skip church.  I don't even know what outbreaks we have here, and we go to places with snotty kids sharing stuff all the time.  I would not take a newborn, and you could ask your OB about your risk, but I think risk is low for LO.

Thanks @brachysira‌, I was just talking to my mom saying we were probably still coming, but she is so freaked out and doesn't want us to risk it. So I guess we aren't going. If it is going to make her freaked out the entire weekend, it's not worth it.

  • I would probably go, too. I guess it also depends on what type of area your mom lives in. If it's a really small town with one church, one park, one grocery store, etc., I would be more concerned if there was a reported case of measles than if there were a reported case where I live (medium sized city with tons of suburbs where a few cases in one area of the city wouldn't necessarily mean anything for me 30+ miles away). Plus as PP said, there are probably cases of the measles everywhere and we could all be exposed at some point when we go about our daily lives. Hope you enjoy your visit if you end up going!

Also, I'm a bit of a germaphobe, so if I wouldn't necessarily be worried about it, that's a good sign!

  • As long as DD is up on her shots and the outbreak was minor I think I would still go.  If MiL is worried, maybe just try to limit her contact with lots of other people and kids.
