Baby Names

Combining grandmothers names together?

My DH and I both were really close to our grandmothers and wanted to honor them by using their names if this baby is a girl.  However we also are really fond of the name Harper for a girl, so I thought of combining the names together for the middle name.  My grandmothers name was Evelyn and his grandmother was Elaine.  So I came up with Evelaine.  Harper Evelaine.   DH doesn't seem completely on board and his mother really doesn't like it, but I think it could be pretty and unique, beside it's only for the middle name.  Any thoughts?

  • Smoosh names are really nms.  What about two middle names or using a totally separate E name to just reuse the initial.  Some cultures feel that's the best way to honor someone.

On a side note, I like Evelyn Elaine much better than Harper <Anything>...so maybe my taste in names is just too far off of yours to be useful.

  • @MandMLeona I originally wanted to do Evelyn Elaine, but my DH said it sounded too old fashioned.
  • If you and your H were both super excited about it, I would shrug. It isn't horrible sounding and if you both felt that it honored the grandmothers sufficiently, that would be fine.

But your H doesn't like it. It's not so beautiful or so clever that you are going to win him over. Just pick one and save the other.
  • i suppose you are right.  Husband doesn't seem convinced so I guess we'll try one or the other.

Evelyn Elaine is gorgeous!  Maybe he will come around? Sell him on the NN Evie, maybe?

    Huh?
In the Twilight books, the demon baby's name is Renesmee after her grandmothers, Renee and Esme. This sort of "smoosh" name is widely regarded as juvenile and in poor taste.

I don't think Evelaine is actually that bad. But there is a stigma against the smoosh names as a category.
  • ahhh hahahahaa... ugh well I do not want people thinking I've gotten my naming ideas from Twilight.... That in itself maybe reason enough not to use it.
  • I agree Evelyn Elaine is beautiful, don't care for the smoosh
  • Evelyn Elaine is lovely. I really don't care for the smoosh idea either.

  • You could do Laine or Lainey for a FN as well. It's probably not the most popular choice, but it's a nice enough alternative for Elaine.

    She's a demon baby?  Interesting.

I read the first book, heavily judged myself, and don't actually know what happens after.
I'm not really sure. My sister explained it to me once, but I don't remember the specifics. Hybrid, maybe? In any event, part-vampire, part human, somehow involved with a werewolf who has a creepy fascination with a baby? I'm sure there's a wiki.

How about Evangeline? Or something else that sounds similar? I'm also against the smooth name. Evelyn Elaine is my favorite.

Evelaine is pretty bad., but I REALLY dislike Harper! It is very harsh. Please consider using either, very lovely name, of your grandmothers. Evelyn Elaine or Elaine Evelyn . I would toss Harper out. You will be glad in a few years when you can't stand to hear another Harper, Hadley, Henley, Harley, Hemsley, Hayden...........yikes!( I think the H's are nearing the end of its run)

I agree with PP that Evelyn Elaine is a lovely name. And Evie is such a cute nn. If DH is definitely against it, then I think using both names as middle names is better than the smoosh.

  • Evelyn Elaine is lovely.  Harper and Evelaine are not.

Also, if you read the first Twilight but not the rest I can quickly summarize for you.  They have the demon baby.  People are upset.  A huge battle is to ensue.  Bella and Edward explain that the baby is not a vampire but some sort of hybrid and everyone says "Oh, ok.  Let's go home".  And that is literally all.
  • I wouldn't put them together. Harper Elaine sounds better than Harper Evelyn IMO.
  • I also love Evelyn Elaine. Gorgeous. Nn Evie or Lainey are just so adorable.
  • I second Evelyn Elaine. I love Evie.

  • You don't have to honor every person you know/love.  Pick one and use it.  Both Harper Evelyn and Harper Elaine sound lovely.  Harper Evelaine sounds silly.

I don't want to state the possible obvious, but if your hubs feels these names are too old fashioned maybe he shouldn't have suggested naming baby girl after Grandma in the first place.

If you still love Evelyn Elaine, you might want to show your H the recent lists from Social Security. Evelyn is one of the most popular names in the country (ranked #20 in 2013, about the same as Harper (#16)), so it certainly will not sound out of place among your daughter's peers!
