Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

xpost: Developmental concerns with almost 12 month old

Morning everyone! I have a gorgeous baby girl who will be one on the 4th.  I am being worry mom today and thought I would reach out for some comments and advice. I got some great comments on the 9-12 month board but I still want to hear from others that may be having or have had the same issues. Thanks in advance!!

We have found out (through my pushing concerns) that she has hip dysplasia. She rolled from her belly to back starting at about 6 months old but had a hard time rolling from her back to front and then all of a sudden just started doing it (YAY!) at about 10.5 months old.  She cannot crawl but does pivot in circles (since about 8 months) to get things.  She loves being on her back and side.  She has been able to support her own weight since quite young and loves to stand.  Recently she started enjoying a good walk around with assistance and encouragement (we give her a little tilt to encourage one foot in front of the other).  Her legs are very turned out though and her ankles roll in.

For communication, she is a HUGE smiler, very happy, and makes sounds to communicate constantly.  Although, she does not make the formal babbling sounds where they string them (i.e. babababa).  She does understand the signs for eat, more (she actually does this sign), cat, and nurse.  She also knows who sissy is (her favorite person) and daddy.

For fine motor, she seems to be up to speed, although, she has not yet mastered the pincher grasp.

Could she just be a few months on the baby side instead of toddler?  Do you think she will catch up?  I get these moments where I worry that something is seriously wrong with her.  I have been told by her pediatrician that she is perfectly normal and just a bit more on the baby side but this is also the same office that didn't see anything wrong with her hips and her not crawling until I pushed them on the subject.

She has an appointment with Shriner's Children's Hospital for an evaluation of her hips.  I am really looking forward to it!  Has anyone else gone through anything similar?  Anyone have a baby that started out "delayed" and then caught up?

Thanks for taking the time to read my post!!

Are you concerned that she is behind with crawling/walking AND with language?  I'm a little confused about your concern.  I understand being concerned that she doesn't crawl - if she does have hip dysplasia, that would a likely culprit and hopefully something that can be addressed.  It's good that you've been persistent and are taking her for an evaluation.

Your LO doesn't seem behind otherwise though, so I'm not sure why you're concerned.  DS didn't walk until 14 months, and not walking up until 18 months is considered normal.  DS also didn't have any words (not even mama and papa) until 17 months, when he had a language explosion.  At 12 months his language seemed just like your daughter's - completely normal.  Some babies are later with developments than others - there is a huge range of development stages for babies.  Not all of them do stuff at the same time, which is why you can't compare your baby to others.

  • I should have added this in from the other post too:

I went off of a developmental checklist a bit ago and she isn't doing several things that it lists.  Such as:

Putting toys into a container and dumping them
    Understanding a few commands
    Stringing her sounds together
    Pointing at things
    Waving hello or bye bye
    Copying actions or sounds

So your LO did make many consonant sounds?

I'm being a worrier.  I just an even more freaked because I should have acted on my hunch about her hips sooner and what if there are other issues with her development being missed too.  I know the visit to Shriners will give me answers.  It also helps to hear from others who may have things to to share about their own LO's.

The only thing that stands out to me is that she doesn't have a pincer grasp yet. Otherwise, she sounds like she's well within the normal range. But if you're concerned, I would get her evaluated by EI--the evaluation is free, and sometimes can take a few months to set up, at which point you may be glad that you have it or may decide you don't need it and cancel it.

I would also be concerned about the fact that my pedi didn't catch hip dyslplasia until now, so I personally would get my LO evaluated if I had other concerns they were brushing off.

  • I agree with @hilsy85 regarding the pincer grasp, but also the fill-and-dump activity.

My son didn't point, wave, until he was 14-15m.  (he pointed with his whole hand earlier, but only with his pointer finger until 15m).  As for comprehension, I think around 13m I first felt confident that he understood what I was saying.

Having said all that, if you are concerned, go ahead and get an EI evaluation.

  • She seems well within normal range to me. My son (17 mo) didn't start waving bye until after 12 months, and now he does it, and says "bye bye" routinely. The developmental list in the book we use says things like "should, may be, and might be" for different lists. Maybe one like that would be better for your peace of mind.

  • I think we all do or have worried about something our child is or isn't doing, so your not alone. Just focus on her appointment and the hip problem because that would explain the difficulty with crawling. As far as the pincher grasp just keep at it, she is bound to get it soon. At meal times just keep putting small pieces of food, I would use her favorite foods so it makes her want to grab it. You mentioned her favorite person is her sissy, just as an idea have your older daughter sit next to your younget so she can watch her eat as well. Good luck with the appointment.
