Rant - Mother's Day Gift

Please tell me I'm being a raging bitch and that I need to STFU. I'm really annoyed right now and I feel like I need to have more sympathy, but I'm struggling.

I ordered a gift for my mom on ETSY for Mother's Day on the 7th. I knew the gift would be late, but my mom wasn't going to be home until the 13th so I thought it would be okay. Not to mention I emailed the seller and she said the product would ship by the 13th at the latest.

Anyway, I never got notification that it shipped, so on the 15th I messaged her asking what was up. No response. I emailed again on the 23rd because it still hadn't shipped and I was ready to cancel. No response. I looked up reviews on the shop (should have done this BEFORE ordering) and about 4 out of 5 reviews were all 5 star reviews. The others were 1 star. All for delayed or non-shipment of product. All stating there was a lack of response from the seller. She would respond to almost all reviews with a frantic excuse that didn't sound legit.

Anyway, this afternoon I finally got a response from her. She said she's sorry for the delay, but she had a miscarriage. She's offered to ship it out 1 - day shipping free of charge.

I want so badly to believe her, but from all of the reviews I'm having a really hard time doing that. She actually responded to reviews during the past few weeks, why couldn't she just send me a message with a head's up that something was going on?

Am I being insensitive to her situation or do I have every right to be annoyed???

Flame away. I know I'm hormonal and might just be a raging B right now. That's why I'm coming on here to bitch and not flaming her...

  • Ya, I think I'm just more butthurt by the whole thing. I really REALLY hope no one would lie about a miscarriage, but some of these excuses are so ridiculous that I really wouldn't put it past her.

I just responded to please ship the package by tomorrow and thank you.

  • Good response. If she's lying its not worth your wasted energy. If she still doesn't ship it, politely cancel your order.
  • Take the offer and see if it shows up. If it doesn't, which is possible, cancel and report to etsy and paypal. I had a seller not send my stuff ($125 worth of curtains and crib skirt for DS. He still doesn't have those things) but we went back and forth for so long that I could no longer report to PayPal for my money back (45 days). I had to go to the bank, file and affadavit, and wait for them to deal with it. That shop has been closed ever since.

  • Etsy is tricky sometimes....some sellers are a joy and some are just nasty.  I had a problem with a seller for my wedding.  I wanted a hanger with my last name on it (last minute because I had forgot but still 2 weeks before I needed it), contacted the shipper, gave them the date i needed it by, and requested and paid for expedited shipping.  They assured me it would be delivered before my wedding.  It was delivered before alright...like an hour before my ceremony started according to Fedex timestamp, and we were over an hour away. I ended up giving them a good review on the product itself but crapola on the shipping and they kept sending me rebuttals and a gave me bad buyer review.

I hope that your seller isn't lying about what happened, that would be so terrible.  I feel like it's their job though to make the customer happy.  They're providing you a service and should stick to their promises. At the very least she should be shipping your order free of charge, maybe offer you a discount on another order.  And if something did happen she should have closed her shop and given her customers notice that the packages would be delayed.  The lack of response would have rubbed me the wrong way, but if she notified me I probably would be ok with it.

Wow, that is tough.  I think I would be really upset too just from a customer perspective but then feel guilty because if she had a miscarriage, wow, that's awful.  Still, I feel like if you're running a business, you have to respond to your customers especially since the order was supposed to be completed more than 2 weeks ago.  I would think a simple one-line email message would have sufficed with the offer to refund your purchase price.  Either way, I think you made the right decision, and if it doesn't arrive, report the business.  I think I'll stay away from etsy (was considering buying some things for LO there).  Good Luck!

  • Being a seller on Etsy I have to say it sounds a little suspicious! If she had tons of good reviews I would feel bad for her but it sounds like this might be a pattern. Too bad because most of us etsy sellers are good people :) Hope you get your package soon!!
