Growth spurts?

My son is 11 days old. Yesterday and today once 4pm hits, he wants to nurse constantly. He will suck for a while then sleep but as soon as he is off, he wants back on. I know he is hungry because even the pacifier is not soothing him. I remember hearing about a growth spurt around 10 days old. Anyone else experience this? How long does it last?

First growth spurt can occur any time between 1-3 weeks. Other moms told me it can last a few days, so by that count my little guy should be done with his crazy cluster feeding tomorrow... We'll see. (Edited for typos)

  • I've read somewhere on TB what is referred to as the "3-6-9 spurts". That applies to days, weeks, and months. So it definitely could be a growth spurt. DD just turned 3 weeks and so far that theory seems pretty accurate, give or take a day or two.

  • Check out Kellymom.com, they explain it well.

In a nutshell though spurts can last up to a week (usually 3-5 days). During them baby often eats all.the.effing.time, sleep is often disrupted (usually they wake, rarely they sleep more), bf babies may poop less or not at all.

I think spurts are common at 10 days and 3-6-9 months BUT babies cant read calendars so dont expect things to happen like clockwork.

Yep, my midwife told me to expect spurts at 3,6,9 days, 3,6,9 weeks and 3,6,9 months. DD1 was like clockwork on that to the day. They need to bump up supply for the next little while so they nurse non stop for a bit. I noticed the earlier spurts didn't last as long, but every baby is different of course.
