Pumping-3 Weeks and Milk Still Hasn't Come In

Hi ladies; Im new here. I became a preemie Mom on May 3rd (31 weeks 6 days gestation). I have been pumping for my son on a strict schedule - Every 2 hours at first then the LC changed it to every 3hours for 10-15 minutes. I only get 20-30mls total each pump. I cant keep up with my son so he is getting some formula when they run out of my milk. Is this normal to have supply issues???? Will my supply come in eventually??? I am on domperidone and drinking lots of water. He only spits up the formula and we were transferred to a hospital who doesn't offer donor milk. He now has an intestinal infection which I am worried is from the back and fourth between the two. Any insight from you ladies would be great!

  • Talk to an LC, possibly post on the breast feeding board for help too.
Sorry I can't offer more help. :( we had to switch to all formula when a clogged duct tanked my supply and it kept going down at 5 weeks.

I would talk to a lc again. My supply never came in for my preemie either, I ended up drying up at 6 wks. Even though I wasnt successful, they still had a lot of helpful advice and tricks that I'm convinced helped me produce what I could for as long as I did.

  • Some other things that help supply: eating protein and oatmeal, pump for 5min after your milk stops flowing, do a "power hour" where you pump 10min on / 10 min off for an hour.

W a preemie in the NICU, skin to skin is also really, really important.

It took me a while to build my supply and we did supplement w formula in the interim but I was able to increase it enough to meet their demands.

Talk to a different LC, as pp mentioned. She may have some different ideas. GL and congrats!

My DD was born at 31 weeks 3 days and I never developed a full supply unfortunately. I would pump 50ML max and that was after doing skin to skin. When she came home I started seeing a different LC who started me on domperidone. I also took blessed thistle, fenugreek, malunggay, shatavari, and goat's rue. Some of those you can get at whole foods and others on amazon. I also used a supplemental nursing system, which you could try once baby comes home. I don't know what caused my low supply, but my LC says it could have been any or all of the following: breasts didn't grow much since she was so early, I wasn't allowed to pump for over 24 hours, I didn't get to put her to breast for 2 weeks, and at first her suck wasn't strong enough. Have you put our son to breast yet? Best of luck to you, I hope your supply increases.

  • I always had to pump longer than 10-15 minutes. Seven months later, I still need to pump at least for 30 minutes a million times a day. Even at this rate, I'm dipping into my freezer stash bc of how much he gets now. It's no fun, but pump as often as you can for as log as you can. Reducing the number of pumps and the time of the pumps doesn't make sense to me.
  • Thanks everyone for your tips! Im using the Medela Symphony to pump and usually I am bedside. Im going to try the power pumping, mothers milk tea and lactation cookies! I also got great news today!! I can start latching today! Hopefully that will help me too :)
