Reflux for baby

I looked, maybe not good enough, but do we have a check in for our June babies born in May?
Baby is two weeks old and the last few days he obviously has been uncomfortable and spitting up a lot... I was afraid he was going to choke last night, so he slept in his swing which has a bit of an incline. He had his two week well child today, and was diagnosed with reflux.. It freaks me out, and I know it's not my fault (he's EBF) I feel like I did something wrong and it looks painful.
Anyone else have/had the same problem? Any tips?

Re: Reflux for baby

  • I don't know much about dealing with reflux, as M didn't have it and S seems okay so far, but a friend's baby did.  I know she got a wedge for her crib that let her sleep at an angle.  I also know some babies end up needing some medication.  Did his pedi give you any advice aside from the diagnosis??

  • She just said have him sleep in his swing, car seat or put him on his side. All good and all, but it still makes me nervous. Just was curious if anyone had any other things they did.

DS had terrible reflux. We usually held him upright for at least 30 minutes after meals, which messed with his sleep. We finally started medicine prevacaid then prilosec which helped but he really just to need time to outgrow it. It really sucked so I am sorry you are going through it, it seems like DS #2 is ok so far so I am really glad. It is like night and day. The only good thing is there were no lasting side effects, DS now is 3 and eats like a horse with no tummy issues. I know some people like the rock and play sleeper since you can get an incline so maybe look into that?

  • DS has it. He takes Prevacid for it, and for the first several months he slept in his RnP to be at an incline (per his lung doctor's orders). Then it was a wedge under his crib, and then we lowered the incline gradually and now he sleeps flat in the crib. I would say he was about sixish months old before he started to outgrow it, or whatever magical thing happened to make it better, but since then it has steadily improved.

You definitely did not do anything wrong. A lot of babies have reflux! As for tips - make sure baby doesn't lay down right after eating (or does so on an incline). For diaper changes or any time you have to lay him down, lay him down slowly and pick him up slowly. For a while we used an incline to change DS on because he would spit up otherwise. If you are using bottles at all (I know you said you EBF but I don't know if LO gets BM in a bottle) make sure he doesn't swallow air when the bottle runs out. GL!

  • Also, as a bit of a nitpick, I don't know that EBFing vs anything else affects reflux. It could; I have done no research on it. But just because DS is FF doesn't make his reflux my fault. Tons of babies have reflux; just one of those things. I'm not saying this because I am mad or offended; just so you realize that some things are out of our control as parents.

  • C was diagnosed as having silent reflux at 4 months old.  She wouldn't spit up a ton, but would arch her back, cry, and had awful breath after eating.  She was on meds for it until just over a year old when we were able to successfully wean her off of them.  When she was little we did things like trying to feed her in a more upright position (baby can "sit" on your leg to reach your boob, instead of a side lying position).  If he's lying on his side, make sure it's his left side.  That puts the stomach under the esophagus, rather than above it.  Keep him upright after feedings, and burp really well and often.

Hope it gets better!!  (side note, I totally thought this was still about pregnancy reflux, maybe it's time to start adding baby or mommy to the titles :)  )

What I meant by my fault and mentioning the EBF, is that it was something I have been eating that caused it. I'm a FTM, so I didn't think reflux, I thought he was spitting up because something I had eaten was upsetting him.

No offense to your pedi but it's a big jump to go straight to reflux at 2 weeks old without ruling out other issues!!

Since you are breastfeeding…have you ruled out overactive letdown - https://kellymom.com/bf/got-milk/supply-worries/fast-letdown/?  That causes reflux like symptoms.  Food intolerances can as well.

Does baby have symptoms other than spitting?  How's baby's weight gain?  Remember that many pedis don't have much training in breastfeeding issues so they may overlook something easily fixed.  Also remember that some degree of spitting up is normal - babies have immature digestive systems, particularly if they are pre-term (even late pre-term).
  • Lincoln had it baaaaaaaaad! My doctor gave him prescription medication and it helped tremendously.

  • Hi! I had a reflux baby and the fisher price rock n play sleeper was a lifesaver because it held her at an angle so she could sleep comfortably. We tried a sleep positioner in her crib first, but I felt it wasn't safe because she kept wiggling off of it. Check with your doc because we had to put her on medicine and it helped tremendously! Sorry you are having trouble. It is a short phase, but so hard.
  • I forgot to mention, you may have to nurse frequently so your baby can have smaller meals and be able to hold it down. We had to do every 2-3 hours for a long time. Exhausting, but really helpful to our little one.
