Decode this newborn behavior...

My DD is two weeks old tomorrow and nursing is going well except one thing. At the end of her session she will pop off and start crying. Then continue to pull off, relatch, suck suck suck, cry. Repeat over and over. I've tried burping, offering the other side, etc. What I think is going on is that she wants to comfort suck and is mad more milk is coming out. I've tried a paci and she hates it (tried multiple kinds too). also have tried other ways to comfort her when she gets to this point (stand up and bounce/shush/paci no paci/different holds/swaddled not swaddled etc.) all the while still eating her hands, screaming and rooting, etc. like she still wants to eat or suck, but if I put her back on it's back to the same latch, suck suck suck pull off, cry, repeat. Eventually she will just give up or be comforted by one of the tactics and go to sleep. She does this at pretty much every nursing session. FYI I am ok with comfort sucking or whatever it takes to settle her, just can't figure out what's going on. She has not been spitting up and is gaining weight, plenty of wets and dirties, BMs are normal seedy yellow. TIA for any thoughts or ideas?!

  • My baby is older but does this. I agree with you that LO is trying to use the breast as a Pacifier. Mine also refuses plastic pacifiers. She is smart enough now to intentionally use a shallow latch when she is not hungry but wants comfort. It is a hard habit to fight. Unfortunately, you just have to keep doing what your are doing. Offer other forms of soothing. She will protest, but eventually she will learn there are other ways to fall asleep than sucking at the breast.

  • My LC said that when baby is fussy at the boob it may be because they have gas and need to be burped. Burping him has worked for me.

  • Since she does this at every feeding i cant offer too much expirence. My DD, 6 weeks, does this from time to time when she is overly tired and crying but not hungry. I swaddle her in my arms and rock her and she falls asleep.

Have you tried different nursing positions/holds. Or no boppy vs boppy.

  • Mine did this and was diagnosed with reflux. Zantac has worked wonders, and it no longer happens. For us, it started at about 4 weeks.
  • I was going to say reflux also. My baby is two weeks old today and dx'd with reflux. Try relieving them of some discomfort by burping, turning over on their belly across your legs...also could be some gas. Do you have gas drops?

  • How long is she feeding before this happens? Do you feel your letdown, and if so does this happen right after a letdown? Is their any milk spraying when she pulls off?

  • My dd has ways done this and now at 2 months, I've discovered it means she is full and she doesn't understand to just stop nursing since she still wants to suck on something. I just stop her and cover up and after a minute or so she realizes what is going on and she is happy. Hope this helps :)
