Weight gain

With my first I gained 40 lbs, I'm only 5'2 so it was a significant amount of weight. I did get quite puffy so I'm wondering if some of it was water retention and unavoidable. I wasn't as active as I would have liked to been and developed quite the sweet tooth. I know 40lbs isn't a ton of weight but it was hard on my little frame and my feet hurt so much from the extra wight. My question is have you been successful in not gaining as much weight in subsequent pregnancies and did you do anything differently?

Re: Weight gain

  • I gained 45 lbs with DD and I'm 5'5". I gave in to way too many temptations with the excuse "whatever I'm pregnant" and it bit me in the ass...and arms, and legs, etc. I got back to pre-preg weight and even lost a few more lbs with a really healthy diet and exercise and this time around I'm finding it much easier to say no to my cravings and continue eating healthy. So far I haven't gained any weight but only time will tell if it helps to stay within the recommended gain. I know a lot of ppl say your body is going to gain what it needs but I doubt my body needed to gain 45 lbs. 10-15 of those were my own weaknesses for Nutella and macaroni and cheese, both of which you won't find in my house today.

  • I gained almost 60lbs with my first, but I lost all of it and then some after a year of giving birth. Yes, I did indulge sometimes, but for the most part I watched what I ate and worked out. I'm hoping not to gain so much this time, but if I do I won't be too upset.

  • I gained 40 with baby 1 and 52 with baby 2!!! I'm only 5'3" so I understand what you mean about that amount of weight being so significant. I am determined not to gain over 30 this time. I really need to keep myself active and not eat everything I see just because I'm pregnant.

  • This is my first. I'm 5'2 and got up 50-60. I still have 20 of it. I'm hoping to limit the weight gain this time. I'll let you know how it goes lol

I'm only 4'10" and I gained almost 40lb with my daughter. I like to blame working at a movie theater while I was pregnant, I ate so much junk it's not even funny. I watched my intake a lot closer and only gained 25 with my son. With DD I was a huge bloated whale I hate seeing pictures of me from then. With DS I was definitely all baby and only got kinda bloated in the face the last few weeks.

  • My doctor is a stickler about my weight when pregnant. He said that I should be gaining between 20-30 lbs. Baby 1 I gained 24lbs (but he arrived 4 weeks early) and baby 2 I gained 23 lbs (she was 3 weeks early).

I just made sure that I bought fruits, veggies, yogurt, cheese sticks...to have on hand. I'm not one that buys junk food (except ice cream and popcorn) so that wasn't a problem for me. I tried to use the treadmill and elliptical fairly regularly also.

  • My first I gained 27 lbs and lost it all by 2 weeks. My second I gained 16 lbs and lost it all when I left the hospital. I got very sick with both of them so maybe that helped some but I truly believe it's genetic and you have little control over it.

I gained 55lbs with my DS and lost 30 of it in the first week literally and my DS was only 8 lbs 8 oz so the rest was, placenta, fluid and then water weight...it took me about nine months to lose the rest plus an extra 10 lbs and I didn't really change my diet (I generally eat fairly healthy with limited sugar) but I needed to crack down on portion sizes!

I am 5'2 as well. I gained 18 lb with DD and the doctor never said a word about the amount. I was ~10 lbs heavier to start that pregnancy than I now. I'm hoping to gain the same amount, but I'm not sure I can exercise as much as I did with DD. I'm really trying to stick to a good diet to help.

I gained 47lbs with DD. I stopped exercising as soon as I got my BFP and really ate whatever I wanted. I lost 27lb in the week after giving birth and it took a year to loose the last 20. I really want to keep the gain to 25lbs this time. I've continued my running and am trying to watch what I eat. I guess only time will tell.

  • I gained 37 pounds with ds and 25-30 with dd. (not sure on exact number since she was 3 weeks early and stillborn.) That was just in November that i had her and my grief has caused me to gain unhealthy weight. I look the worst I ever have. I am up 20 pounds pre-pregnancy weight. So.. I'm very concerned to put on weight and hope I can just eat healthy, correct portions, and exercise.
  • I'm so sorry to hear about your DD @ADALLASBRIDE‌ .
  • first one gained 40 lbs lost some in first few weeks but really lost all of it a while later like a year but I didn't workout as much as I should have just like once a week and with my first I ate a ton of popcorn, garlic bread, ice cream etc....really tracking cal this time and my dr was getting worried last time bc water retention like my fingers were huge lol.

  • I gained 45 with DS. I went on bedrest at 6 months. I doubt that I would have gained that much if I could have moved around a bit more. I'm hoping for no more than 30 this time around.

I gained 25 with DS and lost all but 5, and I will probably do the same with this one. With DS I was more active before getting KU and then also exercised throughout the pregnancy, and I've slacked on working out since then. I know you're not supposed to start a new aggressive exercise routine while pregnant, but I will try to be active, even if it's just out playing in the yard with DS.

In terms of eating, I've pretty much been eating what I want but trying to eat plenty of protein, fruits, and veggies, and I will continue to eat this way until my doctor tells me otherwise.

I think I gained 20 or 30 lbs but I was very very active for most of my pregnancy (I'm a professional horseback rider and rode until about 26-28 wks). I lost most of it within the first few months. I had a csection so i wasn't particularly active the first 6 wks but I think because I had been so active the weight melted off. Now that I have a kid I only work part time and actually weigh less in the same clothes because I have less muscle. I have a feeling I'm going to gain quite a bit more this time around. :/ It also didn't hurt that my food cravings were mainly vegetables and aversions were to sugar, cheese, and meat. This afternoon I really really wanted mac and cheese.... not looking good in the weight gain department!
