Thoughts on Whooping Cough Vaccine...

Today at my 34wk appt the Dr. mentioned to me that now they advice pregnant moms to get the whopping cough vaccine in their third tri. With my boys I got it the day I left the hospital but not while pregnant. The Dr. told me that kids get the shot at 2mth but it doesn't take full effect until 6mths. What are your thoughts on this? Are you getting it while pregnant?

My OB said anyone who will be around the baby needs to be up to date with their TDap shot, and that getting it between 30 & 36 weeks will benefit the baby.
I'm getting it this week (32 weeks) & SO & both sets of grandparents will be getting it as well.

It does last for 10 years, but the new recommendation is for any pregnant woman to get the booster to help cover the baby until they get the shot at 2 months. This is new since my first pregnancy in 2012 when the shot I had in 2011 for a trip to India was fine with my OB. This time they want it done in the 3rd tri and I had it at my 32 week check up.

I got it in July 2012 when I left the hospital with my son, but my OB said that they now recommend getting it in your third trimester regardless of when you had it last. She said that you pass on immunity to the baby that way. I had the shot last week at my appointment.

I got it around 32 weeks and so did DH. Like PP said, the immunity can be passed to the baby. If we have a second child, I would get it again during third tri but DH would be good for the 10 years. Hope this helps!

Got it with DD and haven't yet but will with this LO. DD is only 16 months but as PP said it's now advised to get it with each pregnancy.

My hospital has a grant to give it free to moms before being discharged after having baby, so I couldn't even get it at my OB despite the new recommendations.. I went and got it from the health department last week. CDC recs cocooning the baby and moms getting it very pregnancy, I'm not passing up an opportunity to pass immunities onto baby.

I got my booster at around 28 weeks I think? And my parents also got theirs updated as well. I think DH should still be current since he had his TDap a few years ago?

I will be getting the Tdap. It's important to pass as many immunities as possible to LO, which isn't going to happen if you get it after birth.

My DD is only 20 months old so my H and our parents don't need it again since they all got it before she was born. But like others have said, my ob said it was important for me to get again so I can pass the immunity along to the baby. I had it done at my last appointment, 29w6d.

I had mine at my 30 week appointment. With DD I had it at birth. So yes it's a new recommendation.

I just got mine today. 30w5d.
The ob told me there has been an outbreak in whooping cough from people going unvaccinated. That's why they changed the rule to every pregnancy to pass on the immunity to the baby. There has been an increase in infant deaths because they aren't fully vaccinated till 6mos. I hadn't heard of it before either. But if it helps protect the baby I was for it.

I got mine at 33 weeks and so did DH. My OB said I should get it before 36 weeks. Both sets of grandparents will get it at least 2 weeks before baby is born.

Ill be getting mine at my next appointment, 33 weeks, I had it around then when I was pregnant with DS also. My family is all up to date with their shots already.

Does anyone know what they say about spouses? Every 10 years still? My husband had his a few years ago. Both of my boys are up to date on vaccines so I assume they are okay too? This is new since my last two pregnancies.

Spouses should be good for 5 years from the last dose. (Maybe 10, but I think they are now recommending 5 years because of the increase in outbreaks).
Mom should now have it done with each pregnancy (new recommendation).

This is what I was told too; every 5 years for spouse/those in close contact with baby and every pregnancy for mom regardless of how long it's been since your last one.
