Oh, I just remembered, I have a crafty question

So, I saw these bare foot sandals,  I would love to make this, but with a hard sandal bottom, my question is...do you think it can be done and how?  I was thinking maybe of buying a cheap pair of baby flip flops and taking the plastic part off and sewing the elastic on there, but I have no idea.  What do you ladies think?

Re: Oh, I just remembered, I have a crafty question

  • I'm not sure it can be done that way.  I would assume the elastic would rub wrong and cause blisters.

It can't hurt to try if you can get the sandals cheap. If you do it, I'd use a really thick needle, like a denim or doll making needle. Maybe even buy two foam sheets and cut out the flip flop shape yourself. Craft glue the elastic bands in between the foam sheets.

ETA: if you did buy the foam, I'd recommend E6000 glue. You can buy EVA foam at some craft stores.
  • @unconnhuskie007 it's for my lo, she's 17mnths.  I thought they were adorable, but she couldn't wear them outside, we live in the city, and why wear them in the house when she can go barefoot anyway, so I thought a hard bottom would be the solution. Booo.

Ooooohh @narwhalbacon, foam sheets, I hadn't thought of that.  I'm going to go to Michael's this weekend and see what I can find.
  • Many craft stores also selling bundles of leather or leather sheet. i've used those to make homemade baby shoes. I've never made sandals though.

That is true @Uconnhuskie007, hmmmm.  This is why I need you guys, you make me see reason.

Alright I wonder if I can shape out the foam to the sandal bottom and glue the elastic band ends between the foam and the sandal, or do you think that would defeat the purpose?

  • I just read something about Vibram rubber for shoe bottoms.  I'm going to check that out too.
  • The foam I'm talking about is the same as what flip flops are made of. It's thicker than normal craft foam.
  • @sweetturnip, lo hates keeping her shoes on, so sadly flip flops wouldn't work for her and I also wanted a crafty project to work on.  :)
