Wills

H and I really need to make a will before DD arrives and we'd like to just do it online. Ours will be pretty darn basic as the only things we really own are our house and cars. We just want to specify who will have guardianship of her if we both die and how our money and home will be handled.

Does anyone have any experience with an online site they could recommend?

TIA!

Yeah we need to do this as well...just one of those things I don't like to think about even though I KNOW it's a good idea and something that should be done.

  • Oh my gosh, I'm so glad you posted this! We finally picked guardians but then lost all momentum about writing a will. @Luckynumbers81 Was there a fee with Legal Zoom?

  • When we got life insurance the agent recommended legal zoom to do a will/living trust if we didn't want to spend all the money going through a lawyer.

  • Legalzoom appears to be $69 for the basic or $79 for the comprehensive.

You do have to have the dependent's full name though ...and since we still haven't nailed down LO's name I guess we're waiting til after she's here!

  • We ended up meeting with an attorney to make sure we did everything right. DH and I both got wills with a trust guilt in for the boys, power of attorneys, and medical/health care power of attorneys. It cost $340 and I am so glad it's done!!

Same here. DH thinks picking my parents will hurt his parent's feelings...ummm we'll be dead so who cares?!
I wouldn't dare use either of our parents. My sister can't even look after herself plus she doesn't like kids. And all his siblings have drug or abuse problems.

I have a friend that might work but they are much more religious then we are and i'm not sure they ever plan on having kids of their own even.

    Kind of at a loss.

  • So glad you all are talking about this.  I've tried talking to DH about it because it's so important and something that needs to be done.  I'd brought it up a few times after DD1 was born and he just kept kind of brushing it off.  I think it makes him really uncomfortable planning for in case something happens.  Anyone else's DH or maybe even you that are hesitant?  I never really pushed it but I have very strong feelings on what should happen so I think it's time to get serious.

DH refused to do anything before our first was born or even afterward. Then, last year (***LOSS WARNING**), DH's best friend lost his wife during childbirth. It was a total tragic, freak accident thing, but it absolutely motivated DH to get our affairs in order. Even still, we can't agree on a guardian.

We didn't use a website but did do one through a lawyer. Our lawyer offered a package deal with living wills, power of attorney, will, and trust establishment. It was nice to get it all done. Legal zoom may be great but I'd also suggest contacting an attorney to see if they offer the pretty basic package like we got. Even when you don't own a lot you'd be surprised at all the other pieces, like life insurance policies. We were even able to specify who could NOT be guardians.
We plan to do something more in depth at some point, but I want a basic starting point for now.

Same for us. :(  Both our parents will be too old and would probably consider it a burden, so I don't want to do that to them.  I am sad that I don't think my sister will be a suitable guardian, because I always figured that's who I would ask to watch over our kids.  My BFF already will have 3 kids, plus she will be listed as the guardian for her sibling's kids, so I can't ask her.  DH has no siblings.  We are really at a loss and while I would like to just ignore the subject and hope it never comes up, we really need to be responsible and figure this out. Ugh.

My DH is like this. I'm hoping that I can start talking him into this ASAP. I think he's just scared.

  • We finally agreed on DH's parents. They live in the same town as the rest of DH's family, so it'll be like "a village to raise a child" type feel for Logan. My mom can't really handle taking care of a baby with all that she has going on. Plus I think she might lose it if I die. :( So morbid...

We keep talking about getting the will done but it kinda just freaks us out and we keep changing the subject and putting it off.

  • As an insurance agent I recommend this to my clients all the time. https://www.uslegalforms.com/wills/ this is a good website to use otherwise check out your local office max they sell a will kit for about $20. Once complete take them to get notarized its nice to have something in place until a lawyer is affordable!

we did this too.  our will was a little more complicated then being able to do it online.  We needed trust executors etc.

  • A lot of large companies also offer access to a legal service for this type of stuff.
