Supplementing Advice

Hey guys.
I've decided to start supplementing.   I was EB, however, my nipples were getting chapped and using the lanolin was a struggle.  DS won't latch if I have it on, so I have to wipe it off.  So Nipples are KILLING me.  Then this weekend, I was in a wedding and my husband had to take care of DS a lot and there was not a lot of time to pump.  Also he sleeps so much he's not getting as many feedings in as seems ideal.  He has gained weight, but I still just want to play it safe.  I figured Even if I can have just one feeding free, that would help me feel so much better.  The past 2 nights I've been giving him the Similac for supplementation and he seems to be taking to it fine.  He's never had a problem switching between bottle and breast with my pumping so I'm not worried about that. I'm just wondering what advice y'all have.  How much should I be giving him for a meal?  Just any advice from the people who already are doing this would be great!

Re: Supplementing Advice

  • How old is DS? Its common to have pain while your nips toughen up for the first bit.

DS hates the lanolin too - so I put it on when I know one side will have a break. He will unlatch when its there. Must not taste too good.

  • I've heard and read that coconut oil is great for chapped nips as well, and maybe your DS won't mind as much as the lanolin.

I don't have any advice about the supplementing. I hope you get more answers and figure out something to save your nips and keep DS happy and healthy.

I just saw the pedi today and wax told I have to supplement because at two weeks she's not back to birth weight. Doctor said at this age it should be a feeding of 2-3oz. Since she's not been doing a great job feeding, my supply isn't fantastic, so I'm pumping to get to 2-3oz. And each feeding I don't have that, we are going formula to get food in her. I'm hoping that sometime soon we can get back to EBF, but for now I just need her to be nourished. Good luck!
  • The dr. Just told me I can feed 1/2 oz of formula after each feeding if I would like but to make sure I bf first to keep up my supply. If I want to give a 2oz bottle he said I need to pump as well. He also said to use sensitive formula because it's closer to breat milk. I hope this helps :).

I EP and supplement and what I do is give her as much BM as I possibly can for the day (she eats more than I make) and then give her formula at night so she sleeps a little longer.

  • My boys are 3.5 w and we supplement with formula at night (last feeding before bed and MOTN feeding). We usually get a 4hour stretch the first half of the night and at least three hours after that. I pump during the day and they get BM then. I freeze any extra BM. We did the same thing with DD and it worked great. We use the generic for Enfamil Gentlease. I tried BFing but had to pump and supplement anyway, as well as an array of other challenges, so this works better for us.
