1st Trimester

Morning sickness & work

Obviously we all can't just ditch work during the first trimester, but I am wondering how to deal with this nausea while at work... I have been throwing up for 3 days in a row now and I have to constantly be snacking... What should I do? Or what CAN I do? I wish I could just lay in bed all day because it feels like I couldn't possibly go through 9 hours of work feeling like this, but I know that's not possible... How did everyone else deal with this?

  • Crackers and sprite. :(

I unfortunately have reached the point where I hate all food. So hungry, but nothing is apealling nor will anything stay down.

  • I sucked on jolly ranchers, ate crackers, drank ginger ale.

The biggest thing is for me was figuring out my bodies clues as to when I was going to start throwing up- if I got to hungry, if I smelled something gross, if I went outside in the bitter cold (winter pregnancy last time) etc.  So I was able to be proactive.  I tried to nibble on food before I got to hungry, I sucked on jolly ranchers before I went outside, I didn't eat in the break room in case someone had something smelly and I tried to eat protein vs carbs.  Carbs got burned up too fast and I was hungry again, lean protein stuck with me and helped me get through the day.

I found that I couldn't keep some prenatals down vs others, so you could look into that. Also, don't take them on am empty stomach.

I agree if it's constant get some zofran.

  • Thanks for the advice! I'm going to try and find some ginger ale (I don't think I'll have luck with jolly ranchers - I live in Europe and never have seen them). I'm not constantly throwing up, I am able to keep some down. I just meant that the terrible nauseating feeling hasn't left me for 3 days. Literally from the moment I wake up to when I sleep, I'm just so dizzy and nauseous. I work in a lab so I'm on my feet all day and can't really take too much time to eat. I might have to just talk to my employer about it if it becomes worse.... Ugh I hate complaining about it because I'm so excited! I just wasn't expecting it to be this bad I guess! I'm going to try some of the tips and stay positive!! :)

  • I have been nauseous/vomiting on and off for about 4 weeks now. The vomiting officially stopped when I started taking my prenatal before bed. My Doc said that the folic acid that the baby needs can have an ill effect on your tummy. Try taking them at night & keep on eating those crackers! Good luck :)

Someone at work made soap for me during my pregnancy, I ended up keeping the bar at work and smelled it if I was feeling sick. The clean and lemony smell must have helped somehow. It wasn't overpowering either.

  • I just got some sea bands and so far they seem to be helping!

    Hi all,

This is my first post. I just found out a last week that I'm pregnant (first time ever!). I'm a 4W5D right now and just waiting for the onslaught of sickness. Not looking forward to it at all! I've already invested in crackers, pretzels, rice cakes, etc. My work is awesome and always has fresh fruit out for employees, so I'm definitely going to keep the apple idea in mind. The other thing that I got after reading up on this sort of thing (again, total newbie here) is hard ginger candies. Anyone else had success with ginger?

As the OP mentioned though, it's hard being sick at work. Beyond the issue of what to eat and when, how do you go about keeping the sickness quiet (literally!). I feel like being sick in the bathroom multiple times a day is going to make it real obvious real quick to my coworkers.

    Thanks,
    ~Keri

I know they make ginger gum to help w/nausea, do you think that might be worth a shot? if you don't have time to be eating much, chewing on the gum might help.  Pair that with some sea-band bracelets and might at least make the nausea "better"
    GL!
  • @Kericharles‌ not everyone gets morning sickness... I had it with this pregnancy, however, I was fortunate not to have it with my first...
  • I honestly only get nauseous when I get hungry so I pack granola bars, pack of crackers, bag of chips, or something small to snack on.  I also found that even though I feel hungry and I shouldn't be after eating breakfast/lunch/snack I find some kind of candy to suck on.  Lemonheads, Starburst, Mike & Ikes, or gum.  It helps for some reason.
