If you could get help...

My DH and I have reached the point where we feel like we need help, but we don't know where to start.  We have 3 yr old twin girls and an 8 month old.  The girls are in school M-Th from 8-12.  My DH is a work at home dad (he has his own business, which basically means he works late at night when the kids are asleep).  I work a demanding job and we feel like we are barely keeping it together (laundry, cooking, kids, errands, etc).  We have a housekeeper every two weeks, but that's it for now.

If you could get help, what kind of help would you get?  If you have help, what have you found most helpful? I'm open to any suggestions to making things easier:)

TIA!

We have a nanny that is also a neat freak, so she cleans a lot as well as watches the kids while we work. Do not think I could keep sane with out her!

  • I got a mother's helper to help me on days when I'm home alone with my twins. She started when the girls were 3 months and was really a life saver back then. She watches the girls a lot so that I can get a shower or a meal or do something around the house, but she will also do dishes or laundry if I need her to, or walk the dog, whatever. I only give her light housework - no toilets or anything like that, just simple everyday things that frees up my time to do other things. She would probably do errends for me if I requested it, but I haven't had the need yet. We also have a nanny when I'm at work bc our girls aren't in daycare yet, but she will vacuum and cook simple meals if we leave ingredients for her. I found my mother's helper on craigslist and my nanny on care.com.

  • In my case, probably food/cooking. I plan on trying to get 100 meals pre-made before my twins get here and then keep on top of it every couple of weeks. My SIL (who has triplets) went to one of those cooking companies once a month to get a month of meals until they were 2. We both WFT out of the house and having a good warm meal that takes minimal effort was the biggest help to me with my DS.

I am still pregnant with my twins, but I have a 2 year old DS and a 4 year old DD.  We have a mother's helper on Wednesday afternoons (mostly to play with DD; DS naps still), and every other week someone comes for a couple hours to deep clean the bathrooms and kitchen.  I also have a couple of sweet friends from church who take a load of laundry here and there when we can't keep up (I can't bend and lift things out of the washer and dryer anymore).  If I could have ANY help (like money not a factor), I would definitely get a postpartum doula/night nurse for a little bit to help with breastfeeding (I know you are past this point, OP), and probably weekly housecleaning rather than every two weeks.  Definitely cannot afford either, so we are just hoping for the best!

  • I have a 3yo and 1 yo twins.  I am home with them and we also have a full time nanny/housekeeper.  My 3 yo goes to school Mon-Fri from 9-1.  If I were you I would hire someone full time who can do both nanny and housekeeping tasks.

  • I have a 4 year old and 3 year old. My twins aren't here yet but I have a cleaning lady that comes every 2 weeks. Once the twins get here my mom will be coming to stay for a few months, mainly to help with the older kids; taking them to and from preschool and to their extracurricular activities. We live in a military community so if I need extra help or anything I have a ton of women around to help me. If money were no object, though, I would hands-down hire a cook! I would love to have someone come in and cook dinner. It's pretty much the last thing I want to do at 5pm every night, LOL.
