advice for early mornings?

DD used to routinely sleep til about 6:30 or 7, but for the last two weeks has been waking for the day at 5:30.  She goes to bed between 7:30-8pm, and takes one nap during the say for 1.5-2 hours.  Any advice on how we can get her to sleep a bit longer in the morning?  What times do your LOs get up? TIA!

Re: advice for early mornings?

  • Haha you are not alone! DD has always been am early bird and lately has been pulling some crazy start times as well! She us usually up between 530 and 630 but today was up at 450!!! She has a 2 to 3 hour nap and bedtime is around 630 or 730 depending on nap time. DD always gets up earlier when teething since her Advil wears off by morning. We also are on the edge if the dreaded 18 month sleep regression so I imagine it us going to get worse! My only advice is to not get her right away. I let her hang in her room until she gets fussy and never go in before 520 unless crying. Sometimes she will okay in her room for quite a while so I can at least caffeinate! :-)

  • I don't want to jinx it...but we used to put M down at 8 every night.  She started waking up at 6 although she used to make it until 8.  So I started putting her down at 8:30, and now she sleeps until 8 again!  Also, I think light has something to do with it.  I am shopping for black out shades.
  • DS is also an early bird. He goes to bed between 7:30-8 pm and wakes around 5:30. This weekend we were at my brother's wedding, so DS didn't get to bed until 10 pm and still woke at 6 am.

  • Yeah, we tried the times to push bedtime back, once for a full week and it never made a difference in wake time. Dropping to one nap stretched it out some but I'm okay with my early bird. As long as she sleeps through the night I get good sleep and I love the down time in the evenings. :-)

  • Thanks Ladies! Trying to limit the light is a good idea.  Otherwise I think Dad and I just need to start pushing our own bedtimes up! :)

  • @sewvt86, I wish DD would do that!  She generally wakes up in an all out scream, standing up in her crib arms outstretched if she's ready to be up for day! I've actually thought about switching her to a toddler bed so she could get up and play, but even though her room is child-proofed I worry about what she'd get into if left to her own devices!

DS sleeps later now that I have room darkening curtains on his windows...but it only buys us about an extra half hour of sleep time. He is consistently up between 5:50am and 6:30pm. Honestly it's a good time for him to get up, as we both have to get ready, get him ready and be out the door for work/daycare by 7:30am. It would be nice on the weekends if he were to sleep in til 8am though, this has never happened. So I'm not banking on it. We got close this weekend, yesterday AM he didn't wake up until 7:30am. It was heavenly!

  • DS has been waking up anywhere from 5 to 6:30. His average is 5:30. We do not have blackout curtains.

I noticed that he took a couple of shorter naps last week and slept until 6 or 6:30. But I don't want to start messing with his naps. I'll just go to sleep earlier to handle the early wakeups.

It's funny. I used to complain about 7 a.m. wakeups. And to think I used to sleep until 9 a.m. most days (pre-baby, working from home).
