3rd Trimester

Pelvis Ache at 31 weeks?

I called my doctor yesterday because of horrible pelvic and sciatic pain...he told me it was normal at my stage since the pelvis is starting to opening...auch!
Do you think this is a good sign for having a vaginal birth? Do you think if it is "opening" so early I may have an earlier birth? I'm due July 23, but I am so huge I don't think I will get there! Advice please!

  • I don't think your pelvis opening up is any indication of a successful vaginal birth. Your hormones are in overdrive and loosening those pelvic joints and things are all a little wonky right now. Definitely sleep with a pillow in between your legs at night and try to keep them aligned as much as you can.

  • This is my second pregnancy and I definitely have started getting the pelvic pain earlier.  The pillow between the knees really helps I think!  Also, when getting up, curl your legs together and roll up opposed to swinging one leg and then the other.  At least I feel discomfort if I do that and keeping the legs together with the roll to a sitting up position helps.  Good luck!
  • I am 32 weeks now. Throughout the second trimester I had a lot of sciatic pain. For the past two weeks I have been experiencing more pelvis pain. Asked my doctor and she also said that it was just the pelvis softening and spreading. Been sleeping with a pillow in between my legs at night while on my side and that seems to be helping. Having to limit my cardio exercise to just using the elliptical since there is no weight bearing down. Good luck with the pain.

It's very normal to have pelvic/hip pain at this stage of pregnancy - everything is loosening and spreading in preparation for birth.  Has nothing to do with possibly going "early."  And FWIW, it is very very rare to not be able to birth vaginally because of your anatomy.

Sleep with a pillow between your knees and supporting your belly.  Do lots of stretches/yoga that target the hips and low back.  Walk daily.  Sit on an exercise ball instead of in a chair.
  • I've had horrible pelvic and hip pain. Midwife recommended a chiropractor and it has helped so much, second visit was today and I'm pain free
