Falling back to sleep at night..

Lately I have been having trouble getting LO to fall back asleep after feeding during the night. He is great during the day, but different story at night. What does everyone else do to get their LO back to sleep? How long does it usually take you?

My guy gets a diaper change then eats and usually goes right to bed. I have a RNP next to the bed and we keep all the changing stuff next to the bed. I leave a night light on so I never have to turn a light on and I change him on the bed. I try to make it as simple as possible so he doesn't wake up too much

  • I feed DD from one breast, change diaper, feed from other breast. She will fall asleep while feeding. I usually wait 2-3 minutes before walking from nursery back to bedroom and lay her down in the cosleeper.

  • I also have a bedside bassinet, keeps all changing stuff next to that, and change diaper + feed. He goes to sleep at the end of his feeding, but the second I try to lay him down (moving as slowly and tactfully as possible), he is wide-eyed and ready to fight. I tried burping, in case it was gas. no luck. Tried feeding again, in case he wasn't really done, no luck. Rock him to sleep, works half the time, but not guaranteed. In fact, he is stirring in his bassinet right now and not quite sure what I'm going to do next to get him to sleep. Poor guy just wants to stay up with mommy!

This is exactly us. Occasionally he will wake up when I put him down and then I give him his pacifiers, and that usually does the trick.

With my first, I quickly learned that sometimes, it's just best to move to a different room and let LO be awake. I knew it wasn't helping him to get to any sort of schedule, but I also knew that him fussing or making cute noises in the bedroom would wake DH, so I just took that time to cuddle and enjoy my baby.
  • DD is in her own room so I just rock or nurse her as long as it takes for her to fall asleep. Usually she falls asleep on the boob, once in a while it takes 10-20 minutes of rocking her after feeding.

  • I change DS, feed him then wait for hi to fall asleep. I have to set a timer on my phone because then I fall asleep holding him in my recliner. No big deal, but I'm trying to put him in his basket as much as I can to get used to it.
  • I try the RNP next to my bed first. If that doesn't work we try the swing. If that doesn't work we bed share. I basically clear our bed of blankets and pillows and lie on the middle of it with him cuddled up next to me. One of those three things always works. I don't get quality rest when we bed share so I try white noise, fans, etc. with the RNP and swing first.

  • Another thing that I've noticed (in my 8 days of experience, lol), is that DD sleeps WAY better when we have white noise on - we have an air purifier in our room and we only have it on when the AC is on - she sleeps like a champ - 3-5 hour stretches at night when it is on. We had our windows open twice - the first night only the ceiling fan and she was awake every 1-2 hours. The second time, I downloaded a free app for white noise on my phone and she slept well again.

I read somewhere that a baby is used to a loud constant noise which makes sense because they were inside of us. It's been working for us.

We also introduced the pacifier pretty early on - may sound terrible, but I wanted a crutch in case she was ever super fussy. I've had to pop it into her mouth the one night she kept waking up every 1-2 hours.

It's perfectly normal for baby to have a fussy period in the middle of the night...as they get older it happens earlier and earlier (as per my midwife). We just have up on driving him back to sleep and just do what he wants, if he's awake and needs some quiet time with eye contact that's fine bc he will fall asleep when he needs it. I cluster feed him too at those times bc he asks for it. Made our lives so much better just letting him be and bc of it he usually just falls asleep right on his own after feeding or some cuddles!

DS likes to fall asleep on me.  So I will lay propped up with him on my chest.  I will doze a bit...once he's back to sleep then I can put him back in his bassinet...but he  usually won't go straight in to it from feeding.

  • We swaddle the babies (twins) tightly before bed in a sleep sack. When I hear one starting to stir I get up and get two bottles ready (we bottle feed at night and I don't pump in the MOTN- did the same with DD and it worked great and I still had plenty of milk). They are usually still asleep and have not woken yet. I turn on one closet light so I can see but mostly it stays dark. I do not unwrap them or change them unless they pooped. I feed them and burp them and put them back down. No talking or eye contact (even if they do need to be changed). If they are awake or fussy I will hold them on my chest until they fall asleep and then wait as close to 20min as I can before putting them back down (to make sure they are not going to wake up). We usually get a four hour stretch and then a three plus hour stretch after using this method. Hope this helps.
