3rd Trimester

staying cool at night

Long story short, it has been starting to get hot where I live and the house is staying too hot during the night, which is making me have some intense braxton hicks contractions. I'm 30 weeks, 5 days pregnant so I get nervous with the braxton hicks.  I brought this up to DH and he said that it is far too early to even think about putting the air conditioner in the window. I'm freaked out that I am going go into preterm labor if this keeps up because the BH last night were intense.  I'm not saying that I need to live in 24/7 AC but just have it in the window ready for a hot day and if it's not hot out, it doesn't need to be on.  Am I being whiney or should my DH just suck it up for this summer? Anyone else dreading the heat of summer?

With my first pregnancy my third trimester was during the summer.  In the deep south.  We have central air here and my OB basically told DH to suck it up and deal with the electric bill.

Do you have ceiling fans?  We have one in our bedroom and I found that helped a lot.  I also kept a bottle of water by the bed.

We typically try to wait as long as possible before putting the ACs in (window units, no central AC in our house :(  )  but I actually just had this convo with DH last night... there's no way I'm suffering through 8-9 months pregnant in the heat at night for the sake of a few $ on our electricity bill. NFW.

  • DH can suck it up.  You're carrying his kid, he can help you be comfortable.  And the heat isn't going to get any better.  I think the sweats I had after DS was born were worse than anything beforehand.

I live in Arizona. It's supposed to be 107 today. The heat will not send you into pre-term labor. Drink lots of water. And tell DH to suck it up and turn on the damn AC! We're hot enough, without adding summer temps to the mix.

Maybe buy an oscillating (sp?) fan as well? We keep our AC on auto at night, plus run the stand fan and ceiling fan. DH and I both sleep really hot. The stand fan helps keep air moving in our room

Dehydration will though and being to hot can lead to dehydration.  Especially at night when you are asleep and therefore not drinking anything.
  • Yeah, you are basically a human furnace right now. If you need the AC, you need the AC. He needs to get over it. We put a super powerful fan in our room and I ran with that for awhile, but the last couple of days it's gotten up to 76 degrees in our apartment and that is way too hot for me. Today, it's almost 90 outside. The AC is running and I don't feel bad about it. :)

  • Ditto everyone else, your husband has never been pregnant & in the summer none the less & he needs to suck it up & put the window unit in.  If he won't you stand your ground, find a brother/friend/somebody who will.  Damn some being hot at night because hes cheap.  If your hot, your not sleeping, & its already hard enough to sleep at 30+ weeks, so yea.  Get you some air girl!  We've had our central unit on for about 3 weeks now & each night I keep getting to crank it lower & lower LOL
  • We have our AC on and have for a few weeks. I'd get a friend to put the window unit in if YH won't. There is no way I would be able to sleep if we didnt have the air running.

  • Tell your DH to get over it and put the effing unit in.  Your body is working over time growing a human and its summer.

There's no way I would be able to sleep right now without my AC on! My DH knows better than to complain about it. He'll get over it!

  • Tell your hubby to grow a pair, suck it up, and turn on the air.

  • I turned my air on. I don't care what it costs. And it's only been high of 80s here

  • We put out window unit in as well. Not turning on the central air yet. It's hard enough trying to sleep without being hot.

Wow I have never posted before and my 1st post is how shocked I am at how many people cannot just use a fa. I looked at this post hoping to get advice on staying cool but an AC will never be an option for me because every time it is on I can hear the environment screaming. Guess I need to look other places for advice.
  • Turn on the AC.  Ours has been on & off for the last couple weeks and I don't even live in an especially hot part of the country.

Yes, I guess you do.  Enjoy your fan; in the meantime I'll be in my nice cool home listening to the environment scream.

Yeah, enjoy your fan, when it hits 100 here there is no freaking way I'd be sweating using a fan instead of turning on the AC.  Also we have a toddler and allowing the house to get hot is not safe.  For new born babies keeping their room between 68 and 72 is ideal, but no warmer than 75, to reduce the risk of SIDS https://www.nchealthystart.org/public/babysleep/before-baby.htm I hope you take that into consideration once your baby is born.

  • Sleep in the basement?  Take a cold shower before bed?  Keep ice water next to your bed.  Go to the movies? I care about saving money and I care about the environment, and I always try to go without air when not pregnant, but I was so nauseous when it was in the high 70's in our house that I turned on the AC and really use it all the time now.  I am really careful outside too because I start to feel sick so easily.  Be careful, keep yourself cool and hydrated by whatever means necessary, and then do the same for your LO.

Drink lots of water to help with the BH.  And set a fan to blow on you while you are sleeping.

Wow, nice first post. You could try getting off your high horse and noticing AC was but one of several suggestions. Or not. Have fun keeping cool!

OP, lots of suggestions already. Maybe even some compromise between you and your H to turn the AC on but only run it at a certain temp or something...so it is a little change from usual but not so much he should complain? Good luck keeping cool!

  • I would have beat my husband if he didn't put in the ACs a few weeks ago.

Tell him to be more supportive and to "suck it up, buttercup"

LOL.  I sit on a huge block of ice in the middle of my living room.  The heat from my body melts it into a chair.
  • I agree with turning the AC on if you need to!

Something that has really helped me as well is using an ice pack from the freezer - I have this bean-bag type thing that's designed to be worn around your shoulders - you put it in the freezer and it gets nice and cool (but not uncomfortably cold because it's not real ice). Sometimes I just need to cool down a little just get into the sleep zone and putting this on really helps :)

  • Definitely turn the AC on. He's out of his mind to keep letting you be that uncomfortable. Help him understand. Maybe he doesn't really get what it is that your body goes thru when hijacked by another human being. Make him wear sweats, and see if he can sleep in that. Much luck mama.

Some of us live in extremely hot climates that laugh at your lowly fan.  I have to have A/C and a fan at night to be able to sleep decently.  After having the A/C go out at work twice recently and having the building get to 84 degrees inside (before the A/C was finally fixed) with absolutely no air flow and high humidity, I have no desire to give myself heat stroke at this time.

  • Thank you ladies so much!!  My DH finally put the AC and I am sleeping so much better.  The fan and bottle of water by the bedside were not cutting it.  :)
