20pp and cord still in bellybutton

Is this ok? The doctor gave us alcohol swabs for it but we just ran out...He still has the cord stub. It still has the same appearance. Can it get infected if it is attached too  long?

Re: 20pp and cord still in bellybutton

  • Sometimes it doesn't fall off completely and the pedi has to put silver nitrate on it to get it off. I would talk to your pedi if you are concerned.

With my DD, the pedia told us to do the same--use alcohol pads, which made the drying process much longer. It took almost 4 weeks for her cord stump to fall off. With DS, we were told to keep it dry (no alcohol pads this time) and his stump fell off in 2 weeks.
  • I just read that it can take up to 27 days.

Because the hospital cuts them long to put the baby lo Jack on it kept getting caught on his diaper. Doc slathered on some solution and it was off the next day.
  • Ours is still on at 26 days.

  • We were to not to use anything on it so that it dries faster. DD1 had hers fall off at 6 days old. DD2's fell off at 5 days old.If it doesn't fall off or is oozing the pedi will put silver nitrate on it.

  • My pedi and MIL (pedi nurse) said to only swab it once per day, not often. Otherwise, keep it dry. Fold the top of the diaper down so urine doesn't touch it. Sponge bath only but don't get it wet. If it should get wet somehow, fan it dry.

We were told to swab by one doctor and not to swab by another. It seems you don't have to and it's fine. At our 2 week I asked about it again. (No signs of falling off) The doctor said it could take 3-4 weeks but if it was still on at our 4 week check they would use the silver nitrate.
  • DS cord fell off at about 2 weeks. When we circed him the doc slathered Vaseline everywhere and it got on him stump. It smelt soooo bad. Luckily I was about to dry it out after and it fell off. Still have some blood but it's normal as long as it's not flowing.

We are 12 d pp today. Mifwife told us yesterday to gently pull back his belly button to get air to it after a change to help it fall off

  • When alcohol is used, it takes a lot longer for it to fall off. A lot of pediatricians don't suggest alcohol anymore. The actually area isn't better or worse with or without alcohol.
My DD's just fell off last night at 12 days (no alcohol)

  • We were told only to gently wash around it once a day, no swabs. DD1s was off around 1 week, DD2s was off on day 5.

  • We were told to keep it dry and let it be. It fell off last night at 13 days old. His Pedi said up to 4 weeks is normal yesterday at his appointment.
